Error codes

Range hood
error codes,
read properly.

A code narrows the search and is also the thing most often read wrong: the same characters mean different things on different brands, and a fair number of the codes people look up are not failures at all — they are modes the appliance was left in.

Three things before
you look it up.

A code is a lead, not a verdict. These decide whether the answer you find will be any use.

01

Write down what blinks

Note the letters, or which light flashes and how many times. A photo is best, since a reset at the breaker can clear it for good.

02

Photograph the label

It is usually inside the canopy, behind the grease filters. The same blink pattern can mean a filter reminder on one make and a blower problem on another.

03

Fire, sparks or a smell?

If there was flame, sparks or a hot electrical smell, keep the breaker off and book today. A code on a hood that still pulls steam normally can wait for a regular slot.

What each kind
of code means.

Codes fall into a handful of families. The family says more about the likely repair than the characters do — and one of them is not a repair at all.

How to read a code

Mode, not a failure

80 codes

The hood is doing something it was told to do, not wearing out: a delay-off timer that keeps the blower running for some minutes after the burners go off, a heat sentry that starts the fan by itself when it senses a hot pan, a Sabbath setting that locks the keys and dims the lights, or a link to the cooking surface that sets the speed on its own. No part is needed; a key sequence from the manual, or simply waiting, ends it.

Filter reminders

62 codes

The hood has counted enough hours of fan time to ask for its filters: the mesh or baffle grease filters want a wash, or on a recirculating hood the charcoal filters want replacing. Most hoods count hours rather than measure grease, so the light comes on whether the filters are clean or not, and it stays on until it is reset with the key the manual names. A reminder that returns straight after a reset, or a hood that still pulls weakly with fresh filters, is worth a visit.

Heat and grease sensors

7 codes

A sensor inside the canopy has stopped telling the control a believable story: the heat sensor that starts the fan when the air above the burners gets hot, or on some hoods a sensor that reads grease or steam to set the speed. One that reads hot all the time keeps the blower running with the burners long cold; one that reads nothing leaves the automatic mode doing nothing. The sensor, its wiring and the canopy around it are checked at the visit.

Control board and keypad

9 codes

The electronics that read the keys and switch the fan and the lights have flagged a problem with themselves: a key the board thinks is held down, a membrane keypad worn through or soaked with grease and steam, a speed relay that stuck closed, or a board that lost its settings in a surge. A breaker reset clears a one-off; a code that returns, or a hood that ignores its keys entirely, needs the keypad and the board tested.

Damper and downdraft

2 codes

Something along the path of the air has stopped moving as it should: a motorized backdraft damper that no longer opens when the fan starts, one that sticks open and lets cold air or rain in, or on a downdraft the lift motor and its limit switches that raise the vent behind the burners. A damper taped shut since installation or a pan handle dropped into a downdraft slot can bring on the same code, so the easy checks come first.

Power

4 codes

The board saw the supply dip, spike or vanish and stopped the hood to protect itself: after a storm, an outage, a surge or a breaker that tripped. The trouble is as often the circuit, the junction box above the hood or a remote blower's separate feed as the hood itself. One breaker cycle usually clears it; a breaker that trips again, or any hot smell, means it stays off and a technician traces the circuit.

Questions about
the codes.

The code on my range hood is not listed. What do I do?
A code earns a page here only when the maker explains it in writing. Until then, put the letters or the blink pattern in your booking and we check them against your model's own manual.
My friend's hood blinked the same way. Does it mean the same thing?
Not always. Each maker keeps its own list: the blink that means a filter reminder on one hood can mean a blower or sensor problem on another, and some makers changed their patterns between generations. A code means something only next to its make and model.
Can I reset a range hood code on my own?
Often. Clean or reseat the grease filters, hold the filter or reset key for the time the manual gives, or switch the hood's breaker off for a minute and back on. A code that stays away was probably a reminder or a brief dip in power; one that returns within hours points to a part. If flame, sparks or a burning smell came with it, skip the reset and book.
A light blinks but the hood still pulls fine. Does it need a repair?
Maybe not. Many of the lights owners look up turn out to be reminders or settings: a filter reminder counting hours, a delay-off timer running down after the burners go off, or a heat sentry that turned the fan on by itself. Those pages show how to clear or switch them off with no part at all.
