Range hood
repair cost,
band by band.

Bands rather than prices, because the same repair costs differently on a freestanding unit and on a built-in. What does not change is the order — the cheap causes are also the common ones — or the rule that decides repair against replace.

A range hood is priced once its fan, its controls and its air path have been tested.

These steps are a way to compare range hood jobs against each other, not a quote for yours. A hood that hums but pulls nothing could have a dead capacitor, a seized bearing, a wheel caked with grease, a damper glued shut or a cap outside that no longer opens, and nobody can separate those over the phone. The fan is run, the air is followed to the outside and the parts are measured with the breaker off before a figure is named. The price reaches you before any work starts, and whether to go ahead stays your call.

The bands, job by job

When you schedule, ask what the hood visit costs and how that fee is treated if you go ahead with the work.

The number for your range hood is named standing under it, once the fan and the air path are tested, and nothing is swapped without your yes.

When a tired hood is better replaced than rebuilt, the technician tells you so in plain words; that advice comes with the visit.

What a repair
usually costs.

Set the repair against what a new range hood would really take to put up, not just its price on a shelf. A chimney hood needs its brackets, duct collar and tile cut to line up again; an island model comes down from the ceiling frame with two people; an insert has to fit the opening a cabinetmaker built around it. Filters, lamps, switches, dampers, capacitors and heat sensors are small next to that, and even a blower or a board is usually the better choice on those three. A basic recirculating under-cabinet hood is the exception: it is quick to swap, so on an older one with a failed motor the technician shows you both numbers side by side.

RepairRelative costNotes
Blower motor, run capacitor, bearings or blower wheel moderate to highest A capacitor or a degreased wheel sits near the bottom of this band. A complete motor, a twin-blower assembly or a fan that lives in the attic or on the roof climbs to the top, with the reach adding labor of its own.
Rocker or slide switch, key panel, touch strip or wall keypad low to moderate A mechanical switch block on a basic hood is a small part. A glass touch strip, a membrane panel for a pro-style canopy or a remote keypad with its cable run through the cabinet moves one step up.
Control board with its relays and power supply moderate The board is the dearest electronic part in most hoods, and one for an imported or premium liner can take time to arrive. Clearing the grease or heat that cooked the old one is part of the same job.
Lamps, sockets, lens covers or the LED driver low Lamps and lenses are inexpensive. A scorched socket set, a low-voltage transformer or an LED driver hidden above the filters costs more, mostly in the time it takes to reach and test them.
Mesh or baffle filters, charcoal pads and the grease channel lowest Cleaning and refitting the filters with a new set of charcoal pads is the smallest job on this page. Replacement baffles for a wide pro-style canopy, or grease that has already reached the hood body, add to it.
Backdraft damper, duct joints or the outside cap flap low to moderate Freeing or replacing a damper at the top of the canopy is a small part and a short visit. Resealing joints above a ceiling, replacing a jammed wall or roof cap, or rerouting a choked run is quoted on its own once it has been seen.
Rattles, hum and vibration: wheel balance, mounts, gaskets and screws low to moderate Tightening loose panels, reseating filters and adding gaskets costs little beyond the visit. A new motor mount, a replacement wheel or bearings moves it up, and a mounting that has worked loose from the wall or ceiling is priced on sight.
Downdraft lift motor, drive gears, limit switches or its blower moderate A limit switch or a cleaned track is modest. A lift motor, a drive screw assembly or the blower under the counter costs more, and the cabinet below has to be emptied to reach them.
Heat sensor or thermostat disc and its lead low The sensor is a small part fitted from the underside of the canopy. When the board that reads it has also failed, the job joins the control board row instead.

What the diagnostic
visit covers.

The first visit decides what the repair actually is. The fee, and whether it is credited against the repair, is said when you book, before anyone comes out.

The diagnostic visit
01

Every fan speed and the lights run and watched, the draw measured under the filters, and the grease and charcoal filters pulled and inspected.

02

The backdraft damper, the visible duct and, where it can be reached from the ground, the outside cap and its flap.

03

The blower, its capacitor, the switches or keypad, the board, the light driver and the heat sensor, tested with the breaker off; on a downdraft vent the lift motor and its limit switches too.

04

One part named, with the work and its cost, or an honest verdict that a new range hood will serve you better than this one.

What moves
the price.

Five things decide where in its band a repair lands. None of them is known for certain until a technician has seen the range hood.

The types

Wall-mount, under-cabinet, island or insert

An under-cabinet hood is the easiest to reach from below and to lower. A chimney hood may need its cover lifted, an island hood is worked on from a ladder over the island, and an insert is reached through the liner without marking the custom shell around it.

Where the blower lives

A fan built into the canopy is reached from the kitchen. An in-line blower above the ceiling or a remote unit on the roof or an outside wall means attic or roof access, which adds time and sometimes a second visit with the right equipment.

Which part gave out

Filters, charcoal pads, lamps and heat sensors sit at the low end. Switches, dampers, drivers and capacitors are a step up. Boards and downdraft lift parts are mid-scale, and complete blower motors, especially twin or remote ones, are the dearest.

Grease and the air path

A motor that failed because packed filters and a sticking damper made it strain, or a board cooked by heat that could not escape, means the cause is cleared along with the part. Grease past the filters, inside the body or the duct, adds cleaning to the job.

Model, age and parts

Parts for common hoods usually arrive quickly. Boards and motors for imported or premium liners may need to be ordered in, and a discontinued part sometimes settles the question on its own. A photo of the rating plate inside the canopy, sent when you book, lets the parts be checked ahead.

Questions about
the price.

How much is the range hood diagnostic visit?
The booking screen shows the fee before you confirm, and whether it goes toward a repair you agree to.
Why are range hood repairs shown in bands, not prices?
Weak pull can come from a clogged filter, a damper stuck shut, a failed capacitor or a worn blower, and a hood high above an island or with a remote blower on the roof adds time to any of them. No honest number exists until the hood has been tested. The bands order range hood jobs from the quickest to the most involved.
After the hood is diagnosed, may I turn the repair down?
Yes. The quote has no expiry. Decline it and the visit fee is the only charge.
Could the range hood bill grow once I have said yes?
No. The figure you agreed to holds for that job. If lifting the chimney cover reveals something more, such as a duct packed with grease or a mounting bracket pulling loose, you are asked about it separately before any of it is done.
