A stainless steel wall-mount chimney range hood fixed to a white subway tile wall in a US home kitchen, the range hood's rectangular chimney cover rising straight to the ceiling, soft steam rising from a pot into the canopy, the range hood filling the upper half of the frame, the cooking surface below cropped and out of focus at the bottom edge.

Vent-A-Hood range hoods,
specifically.

Vent-A-Hood is a Texas maker that has built hoods since 1933 around its Magic Lung blower, which spins grease out of the air instead of catching it in a filter. That design moves most of the service work into the blower housing: a wheel that rubs or knocks, a damper held shut, or grease left in the housing. We bring the tools to open the housing, check each blower and its matching wheel, and follow the duct as far as we can reach.

The Vent-A-Hood lineup

What is particular
to Vent-A-Hood.

We work on Magic Lung wall-mount, under-cabinet and island hoods, the liner inserts made for custom hood enclosures, the Low-Profile and ductless ARS hoods, and the M-Line hoods that use stainless baffle filters. The model and serial numbers are written in the owner's guide and on the hood, and the guide uses the blower model (B100, B200, T200, T400) to describe capacity.

No grease filters to change

The Magic Lung blower throws grease out of the airstream by centrifugal force and collects it in the blower housing and a removable E-Z Clean shield. On a Vent-A-Hood, weak draw or smoke in the room is traced to that housing, the wheel and the duct rather than to a clogged mesh filter.

White wheels, black wheels

Hoods with more than one blower pair white wheels with white motor rings and black wheels with black ones, and the two spin in opposite directions. A wheel put back on the wrong motor after cleaning makes the hood pull poorly, so we check the pairing before anything else.

A damper that screws can jam

Vent-A-Hood names screws poking through the duct as the most common reason its damper will not open. A hood that roars but pulls little often has a flap held shut just above the blower, which we reach by removing the housing.

Switches, not a screen

Controls are rocker switches or dials, with the red rocker running the two-speed blower and its SensaSource heat sensor. The manual also warns never to add a solid-state speed control, which matters when someone has wired in a wall dimmer.

Parts

Vent-A-Hood lists its own part numbers for common service items, such as the P1350 LED bulb used on hoods built since 2016. Motors, wheels and switches are ordered by the blower model and hood style, so we note both on the first visit.

Repair or replace

A Magic Lung hood is built to be taken apart, so a worn motor, a bent wheel, a failed switch or a dead light is normally repaired rather than replaced. Replacement makes more sense when the canopy itself is damaged or the hood is too small for the cooking surface it sits over.

Questions about
Vent-A-Hood range hoods.

Where are the filters on my Vent-A-Hood?
A Magic Lung hood has none. Grease collects in the E-Z Clean blower shield and the blower housing, which come off for washing in a sink or dishwasher with the power off; only the M-Line models use stainless baffle filters.
Why is my Vent-A-Hood making a scraping noise after I cleaned it?
Vent-A-Hood traces that sound to a wheel touching the front of the housing or the motor mount screws. The housing may not be seated, or the wheel may sit too far forward or back on the motor shaft, and both are quick to set right.
My Vent-A-Hood runs but smoke still escapes. What should I check?
The maker's list starts with hood size and mounting height, then smooth metal duct of the right size, then a damper that swings freely. If those are fine, the blower wheels may be mismatched or caked, and that is where a visit helps.
Does Vent-A-Hood have error codes?
No. Its hoods use switches and dials without a display, so the signals you get are sounds and speed changes, such as the SensaSource sensor pushing the blower to full power on high heat.
