A technician in a plain gray work shirt stands on the kitchen floor beside a stainless wall-mount range hood in a US home, holding a small handheld airflow vane meter up under the range hood's filters, the range hood lamps lit, steam rising from a pot on the burners below, the cooking surface cropped and out of focus.

What the range hood diagnostic visit
involves.

A range hood diagnostic visit begins with the hood doing its job: every fan speed run in turn, the lights switched on and off, the delay-off and any automatic mode tried, while the technician listens to the blower and watches how a thin strip of paper or a vane meter behaves under the filters. That shows at once whether the fan is dead, weak, noisy or simply losing its air somewhere along the way. The filters come out next, because a clogged set of baffles or spent charcoal pads is the most common cause of a weak hood and costs the least to put right. From there the air is followed: the backdraft damper at the top of the canopy, the duct as far as it can be seen, and the flap in the wall or roof cap outside where it can be reached from the ground. Only then is the power cut at the breaker and the inner panel opened to put the blower motor, its capacitor, the speed switch or keypad, the board, the lamp driver and the heat sensor on a meter. By the end you know which part let go, what fitting it involves and what it costs, and whether this hood deserves the money.

How the visit goes

Range hood diagnostic visit,
step by step.

Point to the part that let go, give its price, give an honest view on repairing this hood, and put it back together running.

01

Hear what the hood does and since when, then run every fan speed and the lights while watching the draw under the filters.

02

Pull and inspect the grease and charcoal filters, and look at the underside of the canopy and the liner for grease and heat marks.

03

Follow the air: the backdraft damper, the visible duct and, where reachable from the ground, the outside cap and its flap.

04

Cut the power at the breaker and test the blower, its capacitor, the switch or keypad, the board, the lights and the heat sensor.

6 of them, from range hood fan not working at any speed to reading a range hood error code or blinking light.

All problems
A stainless under-cabinet range hood below white kitchen cabinets fills the upper half of the frame, its lights on but steam from a simmering pot below curling out past the front edge of the range hood and up against the cabinet doors instead of into the canopy. Most common

Range Hood Fan Not Working at Any Speed

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether it is a chimney hood on a wall, an under-cabinet hood, an island hood or an insert inside a custom hood
  2. What it does now: no fan, weak pull, a noise, dead lights, a fan that will not stop, keys that do nothing or a code
  3. Whether the air goes outside through a duct or the hood recirculates through charcoal filters, if you know
  4. The maker and the model from the plate inside the canopy, usually visible once a filter is out

These steps are a way to compare range hood jobs against each other, not a quote for yours. A hood that hums but pulls nothing could have a dead capacitor, a seized bearing, a wheel caked with grease, a damper glued shut or a cap outside that no longer opens, and nobody can separate those over the phone. The fan is run, the air is followed to the outside and the parts are measured with the breaker off before a figure is named. The price reaches you before any work starts, and whether to go ahead stays your call.

Range hood diagnostic visit,
where we come out.

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the range hood diagnostic visit goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Around Tampa Bay a range hood diagnostic visit often starts outdoors at the wall cap where the duct ends, because summer storms, nesting birds and salt from the bay can each jam a damper flap before anything inside the hood is to blame.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando vacation houses see a different cook every week, so diagnosing a range hood there begins with what a guest may have changed, a delay-off timer, a locked keypad or filters put back the wrong way, before the blower is metered.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In a South Florida condo tower the diagnostic visit first asks whether the hood is ducted outdoors or only recirculates through charcoal, since many buildings allow no new opening in the facade, and that answer decides which tests make sense.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

A New York range hood diagnosis usually happens in a galley barely wider than the technician's shoulders, booked around the building's hours for trades, with the super told ahead of time when the duct joins a shared shaft.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston attics bake through the summer, and when a range hood is paired with an in-line blower up there, the diagnostic visit tests that remote motor and its capacitor as well as the switch and the lights in the kitchen below.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In Chicagoland a range hood call in January is often about cold air rather than a dead fan, so the diagnostic visit feels for a draft at the canopy, checks whether the backdraft damper seats, and asks whether the house has any make-up air.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

After the January 2025 fires many Los Angeles hoods ran for weeks against smoke and ash, and a diagnostic visit there pulls the filters and looks into the duct for ash before it decides whether the blower itself has weakened.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego range hood calls divide between beach houses, where salt air reaches the blower and the wall cap, and inland houses that run a big hood through hot summers, and the diagnostic visit tests each against its own conditions.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area kitchens run from Victorian flats with a small hood venting into a light well to Peninsula remodels with an island hood and a roof blower, and the diagnostic visit traces the duct from end to end before it names a failed part.

Questions about
the range hood diagnostic visit.

How can I check whether my hood is really pulling air before I book?
Hold a single square of paper towel flat against the filters with the fan on high and let go. A healthy hood holds it there; one that lets it fall at once is pulling little. Try it again with clean filters before you decide, because blocked filters are the most common reason.
Should I take the filters out before the technician arrives?
Leave them in, so the hood can be tested the way you use it. If they have not been washed for months, you are welcome to clean them the day before and mention it, since knowing whether the pull changed after cleaning is useful to the diagnosis.
Why does the technician want to see the outside vent cap?
A range hood is only as strong as the path its air has to take. A cap with a jammed flap, a nest behind the grille or a screen furred with grease can make a sound blower look weak, and checking it avoids replacing a motor that was never the problem.
Does the visit fee count toward the repair?
Ask about that when you book, as it depends on the terms of the booking. The price of the repair itself is given in person after testing, and nothing is changed until you have agreed to it.
