Smeg range hoods,

Smeg's US hood menu has three branches: decorative wall hoods (T-shaped, chimney and the Portofino and Victoria styles), pro-style canopy hoods that mount under a cabinet, and insert hoods for a cabinet or custom enclosure. The newer touch-panel hoods count filter hours and can pair with a Smeg induction surface, so their lights say more than older push-button models.

What is particular

Smeg's US listing includes the KBTU T-shaped touch-panel wall hoods, the KPF Portofino and KTU Dolce&Gabbana chimney hoods, the KPRU and KUC under-cabinet canopy hoods and the KSEG insert hoods. Some models, such as the KUC and KD90XU, are marked retiring or retired.

A 100-hour filter count

Smeg hood controls start flashing after 100 hours of fan use to ask for filter care. On the older push-button panels all four LEDs blink together; on the touch panels the speed keys flash, and each resets its own way.

Condensation that has somewhere to go

The KPRU canopy hoods use Smeg's V-Condense baffles, set at an angle to drain condensation into a collector built into the hood. A drip onto the burners from these hoods points to a full or blocked collector, not a leak in the duct.

A hood that answers the burners

Some Smeg hoods talk wirelessly to a Smeg induction hob (Auto-Vent 2.0) and switch on, change speed and go to standby on their own. A hood that seems to have a mind of its own may simply be paired.

A 24-hour air-change mode

Held for three seconds, the 24h key runs the fan at low speed for ten minutes every hour for a day, with two keys flashing. It is easy to start by accident while wiping the glass.

Parts

Several Smeg hoods on the US site are marked retiring or retired, so parts for the KUC canopy and KD chimney hoods may take longer to source. Decorated Dolce&Gabbana panels are special-order items; standard LED lights, filters and charcoal kits are easier.

Repair or replace

A touch panel, a light or a blower on a current KBTU or KPRU hood is worth repairing. On a retired halogen-lit KUC or KD hood with a failed board, it is worth checking parts availability before committing to the repair.

Why are all four lights blinking on my Smeg hood?
On the KD, KT, KPF, KUC and older KPRU push-button panels, all four LEDs blinking together means 100 hours of use have passed and the filters need cleaning or replacing. Press the reset button to start the count again.
Why does my Smeg hood switch on when I start the burners?
Some Smeg hoods are paired with a Smeg induction hob through Auto-Vent 2.0 and start, change speed and go back to standby with it. That is a feature, not a stuck switch.
How often do the charcoal filters in a Smeg insert hood need changing?
Smeg's KSEG manual gives roughly every four months of use, sooner with heavy cooking, and says the charcoal cannot be washed or regenerated.
Water is dripping from my Smeg canopy hood. Is it leaking?
On KPRU hoods the V-Condense baffles channel condensation into a collector in the hood. If drips still reach the cooking surface after cleaning the baffles and collector, book a visit to check the duct and damper.
