A set of clean stainless baffle filters drying on a folded towel on a kitchen counter in a US home, a stainless range hood above with its filter openings empty and its lamps lit, the range hood filling the upper half of the frame, a technician's hands in gray sleeves sliding the last baffle filter back into the range hood.

What the range hood filter and baffle service
involves.

Every range hood relies on its filters. Mesh filters, layers of fine aluminum or steel screen, trap grease droplets in their weave; baffle filters, folded steel channels, force the air to turn sharply so the grease is thrown out of the stream and runs to a collection channel. On a recirculating hood, a charcoal filter behind them soaks up the smell before the air returns to the kitchen. When these fill up, everything else suffers: the hood pulls less, the blower works harder and runs hotter, grease begins to condense inside the body and drip back onto the burners, and a flame flaring from a pan can find fuel waiting above it. This service is more than a wash. Filters are inspected for bent frames, torn mesh and loose clips that let air bypass them; baffles and mesh are degreased, dried and refitted; charcoal pads are replaced with the correct size; and the grease channel, the drip cup and the underside of the canopy are cleaned. Where the hood has a filter reminder, it is reset. If the buildup has already reached the blower wheel or the duct, the visit says so and names the next step.

03

Degrease and dry the mesh or baffles, clean the grease channel, the drip cup and the underside of the canopy.

4 of them, from range hood runs but barely pulls smoke to reading a range hood error code or blinking light.

All problems
A stainless wall-mount chimney range hood on a tiled wall fills the upper half of the frame, a haze of cooking steam spilling past the front and side edges of the range hood's canopy and hanging in the kitchen air, a mesh grease filter under the canopy visibly dark with grease. Most common

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the hood has mesh filters, steel baffles or both, and whether it recirculates through charcoal
  2. When the filters were last cleaned or the charcoal replaced, as closely as you know
  3. Whether grease drips from the hood, smells linger, or a filter reminder light is on
  4. How often you fry, sear or wok-cook, since that decides how quickly the filters load

Cleaning and refitting the filters with a new set of charcoal pads is the smallest job on this page. Replacement baffles for a wide pro-style canopy, or grease that has already reached the hood body, add to it.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Fish fries and seafood boils load a Tampa Bay hood's mesh filters quickly, and grease that slips past clogged filters coats the blower and the duct; the service cleans or replaces the filters and checks how much grease has already gone past.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

In Orlando rentals the grease filters are rarely cleaned between guests, and a hood that roars without pulling smoke is usually choked at the filters; the service cleans them, refits them correctly and shows the owner where they latch.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Many South Florida condos may only recirculate, so a hood's charcoal filters carry the whole job of cleaning the air, and a kitchen that smells of yesterday's cooking needs fresh charcoal behind clean grease filters.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York apartments that cannot vent outdoors clean the air through a recirculating hood's charcoal filters, and those saturate within months in a small kitchen that cooks daily; the service replaces them with the hood maker's own part.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Humid Houston air holds cooking grease in suspension and lays it on a hood's baffle filters faster than a drier city would; a service that degreases the baffles and the channels behind them restores the pull and lowers the fire risk.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland kitchens cook with the windows shut half the year, and a hood's filters carry every meal of it; baffles are degreased and mesh filters replaced if their frames have bent, since a gap lets grease reach the blower.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

After the 2025 fires many Los Angeles hoods drew smoke and ash through their filters for weeks, and a service here replaces saturated charcoal filters and cleans grease filters that the ash turned into a sticky paste.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego coastal air can rust a mesh filter with a steel frame, and a filter that has lost its shape no longer seals; the service replaces it with a stainless or aluminum filter matched to the hood and cleans the channels it sits in.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area kitchens that cook with a wok at high heat send heavy grease into a hood, and baffle filters there need cleaning far more often than a manual suggests; the service degreases them and inspects the plenum behind for buildup.

Questions about
the range hood filter and baffle service.

How often should range hood grease filters be cleaned?
In a kitchen that cooks most days, about once a month, and every couple of weeks if you fry or sear often. Soak mesh or baffles in hot water with a degreasing dish soap, rinse and let them dry fully. Many steel baffles can also go through a dishwasher; check the maker's note first.
Are baffle filters better than mesh ones?
They catch grease differently. Baffles are sturdier, keep their airflow as they load and clean up easily, which is why pro-style hoods use them. Mesh filters are lighter and catch finer droplets but clog sooner. The best choice is the type your hood was built for, kept clean.
Does a hood with dirty filters really raise the fire risk?
Yes. Grease that the filters and the hood body hold is fuel sitting right above the burners, and a flare from a pan can reach it. Clean filters are one of the simplest ways to keep a kitchen safer. If grease has built up inside the hood body or the duct, that deeper cleaning is worth booking.
