A stainless wall-mount chimney range hood on a tiled wall fills the upper half of the frame, a haze of cooking steam spilling past the front and side edges of the range hood's canopy and hanging in the kitchen air, a mesh grease filter under the canopy visibly dark with grease.

Range Hood Runs but Barely Pulls Smoke

Range hood weak suction shows as a fan that sounds busy while smoke and steam spill past the canopy edge, cooking smells that fill the house, grease settling on nearby cabinets, and windows that fog when the burners run.

What it
usually means.

A hood's pull depends on the whole path the air takes, not only on the motor. Air goes in through the filters, is thrown by the blower wheel into the duct, travels through every elbow and length, opens the backdraft damper and leaves at the outside cap. Any narrowing along the way cuts the flow: filters packed with fat, a wheel whose blades are coated thick, a duct smaller than the hood's outlet, a run with too many turns, a flexible section crushed in a cabinet or the attic, a damper stuck half shut, a cap blocked by a nest or lint-like grease. The house matters too. A strong hood in a tight, modern home tries to push out more air than can come back in, so it pulls against a vacuum and moves far less than its rating; the building codes of many areas call for make-up air on the more powerful hoods for that reason. And some hoods are simply outmatched: too narrow for the burners, mounted higher than the maker allows, or recirculating through a charcoal filter that is long spent. Most of these are sorted on a visit; the duct itself is followed without an owner climbing into the chimney cover or onto the roof.

A technician in a plain gray work shirt stands on the kitchen floor beside a stainless wall-mount range hood in a US home, holding a small handheld airflow vane meter up under the range hood's filters, the range hood lamps lit, steam rising from a pot on the burners below, the cooking surface cropped and out of focus. The 7 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Does the hood vent to the outside, or does air come back into the kitchen through a grille on top?

02

When were the grease filters washed, and when was a charcoal filter last replaced?

03

Does the pull improve with a window cracked open nearby?

04

Is the canopy at least as wide as the burners, and how high above them does it hang?

05

Is the outside cap's flap opening when the fan runs, or is anything blocking it?

Check these
before you book.

Range hood weak suction: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Wash the grease filters and let them dry fully, then compare the pull on the highest speed.

02

On a hood that recirculates, replace the charcoal filter if it is past the interval in the manual.

03

Open a window a few inches near the kitchen and run the hood again; a big change points at make-up air.

Also worth checking

  • Turn the hood on high and look from the ground at the outside cap to see whether its flap opens; do not climb to it.
  • Tell us the hood's width, its height above the burners and whether it vents outside, with the model number from behind the filters.

How soon does it need a visit?

Not urgent, but a hood that does not pull lets grease settle on cabinets and inside the canopy, which raises the fire load over time. Keep the filters clean, fry with the fan on high and a lid at hand, and book a visit when it stays weak.

7 things range hood runs but barely pulls smoke turns out to be, from grease filters packed with fat to a hood too small or mounted too high.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Grease filters packed with fat

Mesh filters that hold a thick layer of grease choke the intake, and the blower roars while pulling little. Washing them in hot water and degreasing soap, or in a dishwasher where the maker allows, is the first fix.

  2. 02 lowest

A spent charcoal filter on a recirculating hood

A hood that returns air to the kitchen pushes it through charcoal, which clogs and stops trapping odors after some months. Charcoal is not washable; a fresh pad or cartridge is ordered to fit the hood's model.

  3. 03 low to moderate

    Damper stuck or duct crushed

A backdraft flap glued shut by grease, an outside cap blocked, or a flexible duct squeezed flat above a cabinet can cut the flow to a trickle. The run is traced and cleared or replaced.

  4. 04 moderate to highest

A duct too long, too narrow or too bent

A duct smaller than the hood's outlet, or a long run with several elbows, loses most of the blower's pressure before the air reaches outside. The fix is a better route or a larger duct, sometimes with an in-line or remote blower.

  5. 05 moderate

Blower wheel coated or motor slowing

Fat on the wheel's blades flattens their curve, and worn bearings slow the motor. The wheel is cleaned or replaced and the motor's speed checked on each setting.

  6. 06 varies

A tight house starved of make-up air

In a well-sealed home the hood cannot move air out faster than air leaks back in. If a cracked window makes a clear difference, the house needs a make-up air path; the hood may be healthy.

  7. 07 varies

A hood too small or mounted too high

A canopy narrower than the cooking surface, or hung above the height the installation guide gives, lets the plume escape past its edges. Lowering it within the guide, or a wider hood, is weighed on a visit.

Questions about
range hood runs but barely pulls smoke.

Is a bigger blower the cure for weak suction?
Not by itself. A stronger blower on a narrow or crushed duct, or in a house with no make-up air, gains little and gets louder. The path of the air is checked first.
Why does cracking a window help so much?
A hood can only push out as much air as comes back in. In a tight house, the window gives the replacement air a way in, and the hood suddenly works close to its rating.
How often should a charcoal filter be replaced?
Most makers suggest every three to six months with regular cooking. A hood that recirculates and no longer holds smells is usually past due.
Does a recirculating hood ever pull as well as a ducted one?
It catches grease and some odor but returns the heat and moisture to the kitchen. For heavy frying or high-output burners, a duct to the outside does far more.
