JennAir range hoods,
specifically.

JennAir sorts its ventilation into downdraft and updraft. The downdraft side is the telescoping vent that rises out of the counter behind the burners, in 30- and 36-inch widths, plus a narrow modular vent; the updraft side covers under-cabinet, wall-mount and island hoods and custom hood liners hidden inside a cover of metal, wood, plaster or tile. A good share of JennAir visits are downdraft calls, where the lift, the filters and their safety switch come before the blower.

The JennAir lineup

What is particular
to JennAir.

We service JennAir telescoping and modular downdraft vents, under-cabinet and wall-mount hoods including the Pro-Style professional hoods, island hoods, and custom hood liners with internal or in-line blowers. For a downdraft, the rating plate is on the front of the vent box under the counter.

The filters are part of the circuit

On the JXD7030Y and JXD7036Y telescoping vents, a microswitch sits behind each filter, and the vent will not run or retract until the filter is pushed fully home. A vent that ignores the button right after cleaning usually has a filter sitting a fraction short.

A deliberate press to rise

The start button has to be held for about 3 seconds. JennAir builds in the delay so the vent does not pop up while you wipe the counter, and a quick tap is simply ignored.

Water in the vent means stop

If a spill runs into the downdraft, JennAir says to shut the vent off at once, switch off its breaker and let it dry on its own without opening it. Running it wet can damage the vent, so this is a call to make before any fan test.

Letters that count filter hours

JennAir hoods with a display track fan run time: F appears after 30 hours to ask for a grease filter wash and C after 120 hours for the charcoal filter. Holding FAN for 3 seconds clears either one.

Parts

Custom hood liners are sold without a blower and paired with one of several motor classes, so we need both the liner and blower model numbers before ordering motor parts. Downdraft grease filters, lift motors and filter switches are specific to the JXD series.

Repair or replace

A downdraft whose lift motor, filter switch or blower has failed is normally worth repairing, because swapping a downdraft means recutting the counter. On an updraft hood, repair usually wins unless the stainless shell itself is dented or rusted.

Questions about
JennAir range hoods.

Why won't my JennAir downdraft vent come up?
Hold the button on top of the vent for at least 3 seconds, since a short press is ignored on purpose. If it still does not move, reseat both filters firmly, because a switch behind each filter blocks the vent until they are fully in. If both are in and it stays down, book a visit.
My JennAir downdraft is up but the blower is silent. What should I check?
Make sure the vent is fully raised and that the blower slider on the right-hand side is not at Off. A filter that is not pushed all the way in also stops the blower. Past those checks, the blower or its wiring needs a technician.
What should I do if water ran into my JennAir downdraft?
Switch the vent off right away, turn off its breaker and let it dry naturally for plenty of time. Do not open it to mop it out. If it misbehaves once dry, book a visit.
Why do my burners seem weaker with the JennAir downdraft on?
JennAir notes that a high fan speed can pull heat away from pans, so a higher burner setting may be needed while the vent runs. Try a lower fan speed first; if the flame is pulled hard even on low, have the duct and blower checked.
