What the range hood control board repair
involves.

Any range hood with push keys, a touch strip, a filter reminder or a delay-off has a control board, usually tucked above the filters or behind the front rail. It takes the signals from the keys, closes a relay for each fan speed and one for the lights, counts the hours toward the next filter reminder and, on many models, reads the heat sensor that starts the fan by itself. Heat rising from the burners is its constant companion, and grease-laden steam finds its way into the housing. Boards fail in a few ways: a relay contact burns and a speed goes missing or will not switch off, a power-supply part dries out and the board resets or goes dark, or a surge after a storm takes out a component. Before a board is named, the keys, the harness, the fuse, the motor and the sensor are checked, since each of them can make a good board look bad. When the board itself has failed, it is replaced with the maker's current part, set up for the hood's options, and the hood is run through every function. If the heat or grease that killed it came from a clogged filter or a blocked damper, that cause is addressed on the same visit.

How the visit goes

Range hood control board repair,
step by step.

Run each speed, the lights, the delay-off and the reset of the filter reminder to show the board answers them all.

01

Run every function and read any code, blinking pattern or filter reminder, and note whether the board resets when the fan starts.

02

Test the keys, the harness, the fuse, the motor and the heat sensor, so none of them is mistaken for a failed board.

03

Cut the power, open the board housing, look for burned relays or heat marks and measure the supply voltages.

04

Fit the replacement board, set any options the hood needs, and deal with the heat or grease that damaged the old one.

05

Run each speed, the lights, the delay-off and the reset of the filter reminder to show the board answers them all.

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether a light blinks, a code shows or nothing at all happens when you press a key
  2. Whether the hood stopped after a storm, a power cut or a breaker trip
  3. Whether the fan runs on only some speeds, runs by itself or refuses to switch off
  4. The maker and model from the plate inside the canopy, and roughly how old the hood is

Moderate,

The board is the dearest electronic part in most hoods, and one for an imported or premium liner can take time to arrive. Clearing the grease or heat that cooked the old one is part of the same job.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Lightning around Tampa Bay sends surges into kitchen wiring all summer, and a hood's control board is one of the parts they reach; a hood with a dark keypad, a working lamp and a silent fan after a storm is tested at the board.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando's summer thunderstorms flicker the power several times an afternoon, and a hood's electronic board can come back confused, running the wrong speed or refusing commands; a reset at the breaker is tried before the board is replaced.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

After a hurricane outage in South Florida, a range hood that stays silent when power returns has often lost its board to the restoration surge or to damp air in the closed apartment, and the repair replaces it and checks its connectors for salt.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Older New York buildings sag in voltage on hot summer evenings, and a hood's electronic control can reset itself or freeze under those dips; a board that has begun losing its settings is judged only after the kitchen circuit is measured under load.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Beryl in July 2024 left much of Houston without power for days, and many range hoods came back with a board that no longer answered the keypad; the technician confirms the supply, then the board, then the keypad, in that order.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A Chicagoland hood's control board sits in the heat and grease that rise off the burners every winter night, and cracked solder or a scorched relay makes the fan stop mid-cook; the repair replaces the board and cleans the space around it.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

When Los Angeles power comes back after a fire-weather shutoff it often returns with a spike, and an island hood with electronic controls that stays dark afterward is checked at its power supply and board before the blower is suspected.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

When San Diego fire weather brings a power shutoff, the spike at restoration reaches a hood's electronics, and a board that answers with random speeds or a blinking display is replaced once the circuit has been confirmed sound.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

European hoods common in Bay Area remodels carry boards specific to one model, often with a remote or a sensor link, so the board is identified from the hood's rating plate before the visit, not guessed on site.

Questions about
the range hood control board repair.

Can resetting the breaker fix a range hood board that has stopped responding?
It is worth one try. Switch the hood's breaker off for a full minute and back on; a board that locked up after a power blip often recovers. If it freezes again soon, or never recovers, the board or something feeding it is tested on a visit.
Why did the board fail when the hood is not very old?
The usual reasons are heat and grease. A hood run with packed filters, or left off while burners are on high, cooks the board from below, and grease vapor coats the parts. A power surge can also do it. The cause is checked so the new board does not meet the same end.
Is a replacement control board always available for a range hood?
For current models from most makers, yes, though some boards for premium or imported hoods take time to arrive. For hoods that are no longer made, the board may be out of production, and then you hear about the options, including a new hood, before anything is ordered.
