A stainless baffle grease filter half slid out of the underside of an under-cabinet range hood, a small filter symbol glowing on the hood's control strip.

What F
actually means.

KitchenAid hoods with a letter display keep a running total of fan hours. Once the total passes 30, the display adds an F whenever the fan is on, asking you to wash the metal grease filters. It stays until you clear it by hand, even after the filters are clean.

What to do when F shows on the range hood

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from KitchenAid's own guidance for F on its range hoods. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Turn the fan off and let the hood cool, then unlatch and lower the metal grease filters.

02

Wash them in the dishwasher or soak them in hot water with detergent, and let them dry completely before putting them back.

03

Press and hold FAN for 3 seconds; the F should go out.

04

If F comes straight back on the next use, or will not clear at all, book a visit so the control can be checked.

Still there?

It usually turns into range hood filter and baffle service. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

F does not mean the fan motor or the board has failed, and the hood keeps venting normally while it shows. Seen for 3 seconds right after holding + and - together, the same letter is only confirming that the charcoal reminder was turned off.

In KitchenAid's own words

After 30 hours of fan operation, the display will show “F” when the fan is active.

Every code on this site is taken from the manufacturer's documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. KitchenAid's help page gives F and C for its vent hoods without naming models. The KitchenAid 30- and 36-inch under-cabinet guide W10674120 spells the same reminder out as Clean Grease Filter instead.

Questions
about F.

Can I clear F myself?
Turn the fan off and let the hood cool, then unlatch and lower the metal grease filters. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Will my KitchenAid hood stop working if I ignore the F?
No, the fan and lights carry on as usual. The risk is the filters themselves: grease that keeps building in the mesh cuts airflow and can drip back onto the cooking surface.
I washed the filters but the F is still on my KitchenAid hood. Why?
The control does not know the filters were cleaned. Hold FAN for 3 seconds with the hood on to clear the count; if the letter will not go out, book a visit.
Can I machine-wash KitchenAid grease filters?
Yes. KitchenAid says the metal filter can go in the dishwasher or into a hot detergent solution, as long as it dries fully before it goes back in.

Back to your everyday

Still showing F?

Three things make the booking useful: the letters or blink pattern exactly as they showed, the full model number from the label behind the filters, and whether the fan still moves air on every speed. With those, the technician arrives with half the answer already worked out.
