Hot Electrical or Burning Smell at the Range Hood
A range hood burning smell comes as hot plastic, singed dust or scorched oil near the canopy, often a few minutes after the blower or the lights come on, and sometimes it lingers after everything is switched off.

Burner off, everyone back, then the breaker
A smell of hot plastic or electrical parts means the breaker goes off now and stays off until the hood is checked. If the only smell is scorched cooking fat and it ends once the filters are washed, the hood can go back to work; any smoke that continues with the power off is a 911 call.
What it
usually means.
A working hood carries cooking smells away, so an odor that seems to come from the hood itself needs sorting out. Two kinds matter. The first is scorched fat: grease on the filters or inside the canopy that gets hot from a big pan below and gives off an acrid, food-like smoke. The second is electrical: a sharp smell of hot plastic, varnish or ozone that points at the blower motor overheating, a capacitor failing, a light socket or its driver cooking in grease, or a loose connection warming up in the junction box. An electrical smell is the more serious of the two, because the parts giving it off sit inside a metal box packed with grease, directly over an open flame, where heat and fuel are already present. That is why the right first move is the breaker, not a closer look. The hood's wiring, blower and lights sit behind the filters and inside the chimney cover, and on some installations the blower is out of reach in the attic or on the roof; none of those are places for an owner with a ladder and a flashlight.
The 6 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Does it smell like hot plastic or electrical parts, or like burned cooking oil?
Does the smell start with the blower, with the lights, or only when the burners are high?
Does it fade when the hood is switched off, or linger after the breaker is off?
Is there any haze or smoke at the filters, the light lenses or the seams of the chimney cover?
Has the blower sounded different lately: slower, humming, or stopping and starting by itself?

Range hood burning smell: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Turn the hood off and switch its breaker off at the panel; do not open the chimney cover or reach up to the wiring to find the source.
If there is visible smoke that keeps coming after the breaker is off, get everyone out and call 911.
With the hood off and cool, look at the filters and the light lenses for dark, melted or scorched spots.
Also worth checking
- Note whether the smell came with the blower, the lights or only with a hot pan under the hood.
- Keep the breaker off until a visit, and have the model number ready from the label behind the filters.

6 things hot electrical or burning smell at the range hood turns out to be, from grease on the filters heated by a big pan to a switch module or board that scorched.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Grease on the filters heated by a big pan
Filters and a canopy coated in old fat give off a smell of scorched oil when a pan below runs hot. Washing the filters, and wiping the canopy's underside with a degreaser once the hood is cool, usually ends it.
-
02 low
A light socket or bulb cooking in grease
Halogen bulbs run very hot, and a socket sitting in grease can darken and melt. The lens turns brown, the light flickers, and the smell is strongest with only the lights on.
-
03 low to moderate
An LED driver or transformer running hot
The small power supply that feeds the lamps can fail slowly, warming and smelling of hot electronics before the lights go out for good.
-
04 moderate
Blower motor overheating
A motor with dry bearings or a wheel caked with fat turns hard, draws more current and heats its windings. The smell comes a few minutes after the blower starts and grows on the higher speeds.
-
05 moderate
A failing capacitor or loose connection
The motor's run capacitor can bulge and leak, and a loose wire nut in the junction box warms each time the blower runs. Both are found with the power off, on a visit.
-
06 moderate to highest
A switch module or board that scorched
Grease and steam work their way into the switch module and the control board, and a burned trace or relay gives off a sharp electronic smell, often along with speeds that stop working.
