A stainless under-cabinet range hood below white kitchen cabinets fills the upper half of the frame, its lights on but steam from a simmering pot below curling out past the front edge of the range hood and up against the cabinet doors instead of into the canopy.

Range Hood Fan Not Working at Any Speed

A range hood fan not working stays silent on every setting, or hums for a second without spinning, while the lights may still turn on, and smoke from the pans drifts up into the kitchen instead of into the canopy.

What it
usually means.

The blower is the heart of a hood: a motor turning a squirrel-cage wheel (or on some models a pair of them) that pulls air through the filters and pushes it into the duct or back through a charcoal filter. It may live inside the canopy, in the duct as an in-line unit, or outside on the roof or a wall as a remote blower. When the lights work but the blower does not, the power reaches the hood and the trouble is further along: the speed switch or keypad, a relay on the board, the motor's capacitor, a thermal cutout on the motor that opened from heat, or the motor itself. When nothing works, power is missing, from a tripped breaker, a GFCI, a plug that fell out of its outlet inside the chimney cover, or a board that is not waking. A hum with no movement is a motor trying to start: a dead capacitor or seized bearings. Remote and in-line blowers add a second set of wires and sometimes a separate control, and they are always reached by a technician, never from the owner's ladder or the roof.

A technician in a plain gray work shirt stands on the kitchen floor beside a stainless wall-mount range hood in a US home, holding a small handheld airflow vane meter up under the range hood's filters, the range hood lamps lit, steam rising from a pot on the burners below, the cooking surface cropped and out of focus. The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Do the lights work while the fan does not, or is the whole hood dead?

02

Pick a speed: do you hear a motor hum, a relay click, or silence?

03

Is the blower inside the hood, or is it in the attic, on the roof or on an outside wall?

04

Did the fan stop suddenly, or slow down over weeks before it quit?

05

Is the breaker on, and is there a GFCI outlet nearby that might have tripped?

Check these
before you book.

Range hood fan not working: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Check the breaker, any GFCI outlet nearby, and a wall switch that might feed the hood.

02

Try every speed and the lights; note which work and whether the fan hums, clicks or stays silent.

03

Wash the grease filters; a motor that overheated behind packed filters may start again once it cools and breathes.

Also worth checking

  • Wait an hour after it stopped mid-cooking and try again; a cutout that closed shows its cause.
  • Book a visit with the model number from the label behind the filters, and say where the blower is if it is not in the hood.

How soon does it need a visit?

Not urgent in itself, but cook with lids and on moderate heat until it works: without a fan the fat mist and heat collect under the canopy. Anything that hums without turning should be switched off rather than left humming, and any smell of burning moves you to that page.

The causes,
cheapest first.

6 things range hood fan not working at any speed turns out to be, from no power reaching the hood to blower motor seized or burned out.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    No power reaching the hood

A breaker that dropped, a kitchen GFCI that popped or a forgotten wall switch upstream leaves the hood with no lights and no fan. If the lights are dark too, this is the first place to look.

  2. 02 no repair

    A thermal cutout that opened

Many motors carry a cutout that opens when they overheat and closes when they cool. A fan that stops mid-cooking and comes back an hour later is often this, and the cause of the heat, clogged filters or a blocked duct, is what needs fixing.

  3. 03 low to moderate

    Run capacitor that failed

The capacitor gives the motor its push to start. When it fails, the motor hums without turning, or turns only if nudged, and a new capacitor often brings it back.

  4. 04 low to moderate

Speed switch or keypad not closing

Mechanical slide and push switches wear and fill with grease, and a keypad can stop registering a press. The lights still respond but no speed starts the fan.

  5. 05 moderate

A relay or board that stopped driving the blower

On electronic hoods, the board switches each speed with a relay or a triac. When those fail, every key lights up but nothing reaches the motor.

  6. 06 moderate to highest

Blower motor seized or burned out

Dry bearings, grease packed around the shaft or a winding that opened stop the motor for good. It is replaced; on an in-line or roof blower, access to the attic or the roof is part of the job.

Questions about
range hood fan not working at any speed.

The lights work but the fan is dead. Is it the motor?
Not always. The switch, the board's relay and the capacitor fail more often than the motor. A hum on start points at the capacitor or bearings; silence points at the switch or board.
Our blower is on the roof. Can we check it ourselves?
Please do not. Roof and in-line blowers are reached with fall protection and the power locked off. Tell us it is remote when booking, and we plan the visit for it.
Why does the fan stop after twenty minutes of frying?
The motor is likely overheating and its cutout is opening. Packed filters, a blocked duct or tired bearings make it work harder; the cutout is a symptom, not the problem.
Can a replacement motor be fitted to an older hood?
Often yes, from the maker's parts or a matched motor of the same mount, speed and rotation. When a part is no longer made, we say so before any work starts.
