A stainless steel wall-mount chimney range hood fixed to a white subway tile wall in a US home kitchen, the range hood's rectangular chimney cover rising straight to the ceiling, soft steam rising from a pot into the canopy, the range hood filling the upper half of the frame, the cooking surface below cropped and out of focus at the bottom edge.

Viking range hoods,
specifically.

Viking builds its ventilation around its own professional cooking line: 5 Series wall hoods in 10-inch and 18-inch heights, chimney wall hoods, built-in custom ventilators for a cabinet or plaster hood, the RVL Pureline Pro ceiling hood and rear downdrafts with an 18-inch rise. Most of these are heavy steel shells with baffle filters and a separate ventilator, so a repair is usually about the blower, the controls or the heat sensor rather than the shell itself.

The Viking lineup

What is particular
to Viking.

We service the 3 Series and 5 Series wall and chimney hoods, the 10-inch VWH hoods fitted under a cabinet or soffit, VCIH island hoods, VBCV built-in custom ventilators, the RVL Pureline Pro ceiling hood and VDD rear downdrafts. The model and serial label sits behind the baffle filter on these hoods, so pull a filter before you book.

A heat sensor that overrides you

Viking wall and chimney hoods carry a heat sensor thermostat that switches the blower on, or pushes it up to high, when the air above the burners gets too hot. The blower drops back to your setting once it cools, so a hood that roars on its own over a hot griddle is usually doing its job.

Knobs, not keypads, on the pro hoods

The 5 Series 18-inch hoods run on a push-and-turn blower knob with five speeds and a separate dimmer for the lights, with no display to show a code. When one of these will not respond, the knob, its switch and the ventilator wiring are what we check.

Infrared heat lamps on some hoods

Some 18-inch wall hoods have one or two outlets for 250-watt infrared heat lamps, with their own switches. Viking leaves the bulbs to the owner, so a dead heat lamp is often just a bulb, while a dead switch or socket is a job for us.

A rear downdraft with its own reminder

The VDD 5 Series rear downdraft rises 18 inches behind the burners and counts blower hours, blinking a filter icon after 30 hours. It also shuts off whatever was running when the chimney goes down, so check the icon before calling the vent dead.

Parts

Viking sells its interior and in-line ventilators separately from many hoods, so the blower part number depends on which ventilator was fitted, not only on the hood. Baffle filters, lamp parts and control switches are ordered by the hood's model and serial number.

Repair or replace

A Viking hood shell rarely wears out, so a failed ventilator motor, switch or heat sensor is almost always worth fixing. Replacement makes sense mainly when a remodel changes the hood size or the duct run.

Questions about
Viking range hoods.

Why does my Viking hood fan start by itself while I am cooking?
Viking hoods have a heat sensor thermostat that turns the blower on, or raises it to high, when it senses too much heat above the burners. It returns to your setting once the air cools. If it will not shut off after the burners have been off for a while, book a visit so the sensor can be tested.
Can the Viking hood come on while I am cleaning it?
Yes. Viking warns that if the power is left on during cleaning, the heat sensor can start the blower. Switch the hood off at the breaker or unplug it from the control panel before wiping it down or pulling the filters.
My Viking downdraft is blinking an icon. Is it broken?
On the VDD 5 Series rear downdraft, a filter icon that blinks without stopping means 30 hours of blower time have passed. Wash the filters, then touch and hold the icon for 2 seconds or more to clear it.
Where is the model number on a Viking hood?
On Viking's hoods the model and serial label is behind the baffle filter, on the side panel. Lift out the filter with the hood off and cool, and send us the numbers when you book.
