What C
actually means.

On a KitchenAid hood that recirculates air back into the kitchen, a charcoal filter traps odors after the grease filter. The control counts fan hours and, after 120, shows C whenever the fan runs. On these models the charcoal filter can be washed and reactivated a few times before it has to be replaced.

What to do when C shows on the range hood

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from KitchenAid's own guidance for C on its range hoods. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Take out the charcoal filter and wash it in the dishwasher on the hottest setting with normal detergent.

02

Reactivate it by drying it in the oven for 10 minutes at no more than 210°F, then refit it.

03

Hold FAN for 3 seconds to clear the C.

04

If your hood vents outside and has no charcoal filter, hold + and - together for 3 seconds to turn this reminder off.

What not to do

C is not a sign of a failing blower or a clogged duct. KitchenAid's under-cabinet guide W10674120 uses a different message, Replace Charcoal Filter, for a charcoal filter that must not be washed.

Questions
about C.

Can I clear C myself?
Take out the charcoal filter and wash it in the dishwasher on the hottest setting with normal detergent. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
My KitchenAid hood vents outdoors. Why does it show C?
The control was left set for recirculating. Hold + and - together for 3 seconds; F shows briefly to confirm, and the charcoal reminder stays off from then on.
How long does a KitchenAid charcoal filter last?
On the hoods that show C, KitchenAid says to wash and reactivate it at each reminder and replace it after roughly three years.
Is it safe to put the charcoal filter from my KitchenAid hood in the oven?
KitchenAid's own instructions call for 10 minutes at no more than 210°F to reactivate it. Do not go hotter, and only do this with the filter type the C reminder refers to.

Back to your everyday

Still showing C?

Three things make the booking useful: the letters or blink pattern exactly as they showed, the full model number from the label behind the filters, and whether the fan still moves air on every speed. With those, the technician arrives with half the answer already worked out.
