What the range hood light repair
involves.

The lights on a range hood work harder than most lamps in a house. They sit directly over the pans, in rising heat and grease, and on many hoods they are switched on for every meal. Older hoods use small halogen or incandescent bulbs in ceramic sockets behind a glass lens; newer ones use LED modules or strips fed by a small driver. When the lights fail, the bulb is the obvious suspect and often the right one, but not always. Halogen sockets scorch and lose contact after years of heat, so a new bulb flickers or dies in weeks. A low-voltage transformer or an LED driver above the filters can fail and take every lamp with it. The dimmer setting on the keypad, the light relay on the board and the connector between them can all leave good lamps dark. The visit starts with the lamps and the voltage reaching each socket, moves back to the driver and the switch, and ends with the right part replaced. Scorched sockets and cracked lens covers are renewed at the same time, since a lens that lets grease onto a hot lamp shortens its life.

How the visit goes

Range hood light repair,
step by step.

Close up and run the lights at every setting, with the fan on and off, to show they come on evenly and stay on.

01

Switch the lights on at each setting and note which lamps work, which flicker and whether the dimmer changes anything.

02

Cut the power, remove the lens covers and lamps, and inspect the sockets for scorch marks and loose contacts.

03

Measure the voltage at the sockets, then at the transformer or LED driver, then at the light switch or board relay.

04

Replace the failed lamp, socket, lens, driver or switch, using the lamp type and wattage the hood is rated for.

05

Close up and run the lights at every setting, with the fan on and off, to show they come on evenly and stay on.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay humidity and salt corrode halogen sockets in hoods near the water, and a lamp that flickers or needs a tap to come on has a socket losing contact; the repair replaces the socket or fits the LED module the maker lists for that hood.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Guests in Orlando rentals leave hood lights burning all night as a kitchen nightlight, and halogen bulbs fail often under that use; a light that stays dark with a new bulb points to the socket, the switch or the transformer behind it.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In South Florida towers a hood's LED strip may go dark in sections after a summer in a closed, humid apartment, and the repair tests the driver that powers the strip before the strip itself is replaced.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In a New York galley the hood light is often the only light over the burners, so a dead one matters; halogen transformers in older hoods run hot in a cramped cabinet and are a common reason every bulb stops at once.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston kitchens that leave the hood light on through long summer evenings heat its halogen sockets until the plastic browns, and a light that works only now and then is repaired with new sockets and wiring rated for that heat.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland winters keep the hood light on from late afternoon, and its sockets take the heat rising from pots all season; a lamp that flickers or dims is traced to a loose socket or a failing LED driver before more bulbs are bought.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles island hoods often carry LED lights on a separate driver hidden in the canopy, and when all the lights fail together the driver is the usual cause; the technician reaches it from below without taking the hood down.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego beach kitchens see hood light sockets turn green with salt, and a lamp that works one day and not the next is losing contact there; the repair replaces the sockets and seals the lens against the damp air.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area remodels sometimes swap a hood's original halogen bulbs for LEDs its transformer was never built to drive, and lights that flicker or buzz afterward are fixed with the driver and lamps the maker specifies.

Questions about
the range hood light repair.

Can I change a range hood bulb myself?
On most hoods, yes: switch the lights off, let the lamp cool, then take off the lens and change it from below, standing on the floor. Use the exact bulb type and wattage on the label or in the manual. If a new bulb fails quickly or the socket looks burned, leave it for a visit.
All my hood lights went out at once. Are all the bulbs dead?
Unlikely. When every lamp fails together, the common supply is the suspect: a low-voltage transformer, an LED driver, the light switch or a relay on the board. One new bulb is a quick test, but if it stays dark the supply is checked on the visit.
Can I swap the halogen bulbs in my hood for LEDs?
Only with lamps the hood's maker lists as compatible. Many halogen hoods run from a transformer that does not suit an LED lamp, which then flickers or fails early. A technician can tell you whether a proper LED conversion exists for your model.
