Range Hood Buttons or Keypad Not Responding

Range hood controls not working may leave a keypad lit but deaf to every touch, buttons that need several presses, a slide switch that moves without effect, or a remote or app that no longer reaches the hood.

What it
usually means.

Hood controls come in three kinds. Mechanical controls, rocker, slide or push switches, carry the current to the blower and the lights directly. Electronic controls are a keypad or glass touch strip that sends a low-voltage signal to a control board, which then switches the blower and the lights through relays. Many higher-end hoods add a remote, a wall control for a remote blower, or a wireless link to the cooking surface and an app. Each fails in its own way. Mechanical switches fill with grease and steam and stop closing cleanly. Keypads suffer from moisture under the membrane and from cracked ribbon cables; glass touch controls can be fooled by grease or water on their face, and many have a lock that owners switch on without knowing. The board can lose its settings after a power blip, or fail and stop reading any input. A remote may simply need batteries or to be paired again. None of this calls for opening the hood from a ladder; the checks that matter are done from the floor, and the rest on a visit.

The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Are the controls mechanical switches, a keypad, a glass touch strip, or a remote?

02

Does the display or any key light up at all?

03

Is a lock symbol showing, or did the keys stop after a power outage?

04

Do some keys work and others not, or does nothing respond?

05

Is the control area wet, greasy or steamed up after cooking?

Range hood controls not working: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

If a padlock symbol glows, press and hold the key the manual names until it goes out.

02

Wipe the controls dry and free of grease with the hood off, then try again.

03

Switch the hood's breaker off for five minutes and back on to reset the board, and note whether the controls return.

Also worth checking

  • Replace the batteries in a remote or wall control and pair it again following the manual.
  • Book a visit with the model number from behind the filters and which keys do or do not respond.

How soon does it need a visit?

Not urgent unless the hood cannot be switched off or on at all. Cook with lids and on moderate heat, and use the breaker to stop a fan that is running and cannot be stopped from its controls.

The causes,
cheapest first.

6 things range hood buttons or keypad not responding turns out to be, from control lock or cleaning lock on to control board no longer reading input.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Control lock or cleaning lock on

Many touch controls have a lock, often held on one key for a few seconds, to allow wiping. It is easy to switch on by accident and blocks every key until released.

  2. 02 no repair

Grease or water on a touch panel

A film of fat or droplets of steam can confuse a glass touch control. Wiping it dry with the hood off, and trying again with a clean, dry finger, is the first check.

  3. 03 lowest

A remote with flat batteries or lost pairing

A remote or wall control for a remote blower may need batteries or re-pairing, which the manual walks through.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    A worn mechanical switch

Slide and rocker switches fill with grease and wear their contacts. The switch is replaced as a part.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Moisture under the keypad membrane

Steam that gets under the membrane can short keys or stop them from reading. A new membrane keypad, or the flat cable behind it, puts it right.

  6. 06 moderate to highest

Control board no longer reading input

A board that lost its power supply, took a surge or failed from heat stops answering every key. It is tested and replaced on a visit.

Questions about
range hood buttons or keypad not responding.

The keypad lights up but ignores every press. Has the board failed?
Not necessarily. A lock, grease on a touch surface or a stuck key can block the rest. A breaker reset is the next step; if nothing changes, the board or the keypad is checked.
The controls stopped after a power outage. Why?
Some boards lock up after a surge or a blip. Switching the breaker off for a few minutes resets them; if the controls stay dead, the surge may have damaged the board.
Can a keypad be replaced without replacing the whole board?
On many hoods yes, the keypad or touch panel and the board are separate parts. Which one failed is tested on a visit.
My hood and the burners are linked. Can that stop the controls?
A paired hood can follow the cooking surface and ignore some keys while that link is active. The manual shows how to pause or turn off the link.
