A new range hood blower assembly, a black motor with a clean squirrel-cage wheel, resting on a folded drop cloth on a kitchen counter in a US home, a stainless range hood above it with its filters removed and its lamps lit, the range hood's open underside out of focus in the background.

What the range hood blower motor repair
involves.

The blower is the heart of a range hood: a motor turning a squirrel-cage wheel or an impeller that draws air through the filters and pushes it into the duct. It may be built into the canopy, mounted in-line in the duct above the ceiling, or placed outside on the roof or an exterior wall where its noise stays out of the kitchen. Blowers age in a few predictable ways. The bearings dry out and growl, then drag; the run capacitor that gives the motor its starting kick weakens, so the fan hums and turns slowly or not at all; grease coats the wheel until it is heavy, unbalanced and moves less air; and on some motors a thermal protector shuts the fan down when it overheats. The first task is to prove which of these it is, because a thirty-minute capacitor change can look exactly like a dead motor from the kitchen. The capacitor is tested, the motor windings read, the wheel spun by hand for drag and wobble. Where the motor or its bearings are worn out, the correct motor or complete blower assembly is fitted, the wheel cleaned or replaced, and the airflow measured again at the filters before the visit ends.

How the visit goes

Range hood blower motor repair,
step by step.

Close the hood, run it through every speed and measure the draw at the filters to show the air is back where it should be.

01

Run the fan on each speed and listen for hum, growl or scraping, noting how it starts and whether it cuts out when warm.

02

Turn the breaker off, open the inner panel or the in-line housing and spin the blower wheel by hand for drag and wobble.

03

Test the run capacitor and read the motor windings, then check the thermal protector and the wiring to the speed switch.

04

Replace the capacitor, the motor or the whole blower assembly, cleaning or renewing a grease-heavy wheel as it goes back.

05

Close the hood, run it through every speed and measure the draw at the filters to show the air is back where it should be.

6 of them, from range hood fan not working at any speed to range hood fan stuck on one speed.

All problems
A stainless under-cabinet range hood below white kitchen cabinets fills the upper half of the frame, its lights on but steam from a simmering pot below curling out past the front edge of the range hood and up against the cabinet doors instead of into the canopy. Most common

Range Hood Fan Not Working at Any Speed

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the fan hums without spinning, spins slowly, growls, or stops after a few minutes of running
  2. Whether the blower is inside the hood or somewhere else, in the attic, the duct or on the roof
  3. Whether the problem changes with the speed chosen, or is the same on low and high
  4. The maker, model and rough age of the hood, and when the filters were last cleaned

A capacitor or a degreased wheel sits near the bottom of this band. A complete motor, a twin-blower assembly or a fan that lives in the attic or on the roof climbs to the top, with the reach adding labor of its own.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Gulf humidity around Tampa Bay settles into a blower's bearings between meals, and a motor that hums a moment before it spins, or starts only on high, usually has a weak start capacitor or drying bearings, both replaced before the winding burns.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

An Orlando rental hood may run for hours while guests cook for a crowd, and a blower driven that hard wears its bearings early; a motor that growls at low speed or smells hot after a long evening is replaced before it seizes.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Salt air in South Florida pits the blower wheel and rusts the shaft in hoods near the water, so a blower repair there usually renews the motor and the wheel together and cleans the housing that held them.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Where a New York apartment hood feeds a long vertical run in an older building, the blower works against that resistance every night, and a motor grown weak on that duty is replaced with the part matched to the hood's own rating.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston summers heat an attic in-line blower far past the kitchen's temperature, drying its bearings and aging its capacitor, so a remote blower that quits on an August evening is often replaced up in the attic by the technician.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland roof-mounted blowers sit under snow and ice for months, and a motor that will not start on the first bitter evening may have water in its housing or a wheel frozen in place, which the repair clears before any new motor goes in.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Fine ash from the 2025 fires coated many Los Angeles blower wheels, and a wheel caked unevenly throws the motor off balance, so the repair cleans or renews the wheel and tests the bearings that absorbed the wobble.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego coastal hoods pull damp, salty air across the motor every time they run, and a blower that starts slowly or squeals is showing rust on its bearings; inland, the same symptom more often follows a summer of heavy cooking.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area remodels often put the blower up on the roof or out on an exterior wall to keep the kitchen quiet, and when that remote blower stops, the technician reaches it from outside and tests the control wiring back to the hood along the way.

Questions about
the range hood blower motor repair.

My hood fan hums but does not turn. Is the motor gone?
Not necessarily. A weak start capacitor makes a motor hum without starting, and so does a wheel stuck by dried grease or a seized bearing. The capacitor is the least expensive of the three and is tested first. Switch the fan off rather than leaving it humming, as a stalled motor heats up quickly.
Can a blower wheel be cleaned instead of replaced?
Often, yes. A wheel coated in grease can be removed, soaked in degreaser and refitted, which restores airflow and cuts vibration. A wheel with bent or cracked blades, or one that wobbles on its shaft after cleaning, is replaced so it does not wear the new bearings.
Why would anyone put the blower on the roof instead of in the hood?
A roof or exterior blower moves the motor noise outside, so a powerful hood can run quietly in the kitchen. The tradeoff is access: servicing the fan means reaching it outdoors, which is planned on the visit and never something an owner should attempt on a roof.
