What is particular

In the US Gaggenau offers the 400 series wall hood and retractable and Vario downdrafts, and the 200 series island hood, wall hood, visor hood and Vario downdraft. The visor hood AF 210 fits into an upper cabinet with a pull-out filter front.

Air-quality sensing with adjustable sensitivity

Gaggenau's automatic mode reads the intensity of cooking fumes and picks the fan level, with four sensitivity settings. A hood that reacts too early or too late may just need a different setting.

A colored ring instead of a display

The Vario downdraft VL 414 reports through the ring around its knob: orange in use, white flashes for filters, orange with white for a shut-off, yellow with magenta for a problem. Reading the pattern right saves a wasted visit.

A retractable downdraft that needs its cover shut

The AL 400 only works fully extended, and it will not retract while the filter cover is open. Many 'stuck up' calls end with a cover that was not closed all the way.

Safety shut-off after four hours

Left untouched, Gaggenau hoods switch the fan off after four hours and the lights after twelve. A hood that seems to quit on a long simmer has usually just timed out.

Parts

On the AL 400 the filter cover has to be completely closed before it will retract. Close it firmly and press the button again.
Why did my Gaggenau hood turn itself off?
The safety shut-off stops the fan after four hours without anyone touching the controls. Press a key to start it again.
Can I make the Gaggenau automatic mode less jumpy?
Yes. On the AW 442 hold the automatic key for about four seconds with the fan off, then pick a sensitivity from 1 to 4.
What does the colored ring on my Gaggenau Vario downdraft mean?
