A stainless steel wall-mount chimney range hood fixed to a white subway tile wall in a US home kitchen, the range hood's rectangular chimney cover rising straight to the ceiling, soft steam rising from a pot into the canopy, the range hood filling the upper half of the frame, the cooking surface below cropped and out of focus at the bottom edge.

KitchenAid range hoods,
specifically.

KitchenAid sells hoods for nearly every layout: wall-mount canopy and commercial-style hoods, island-mount canopies, under-cabinet hoods, hood liners for a custom cabinet enclosure and a retractable downdraft, next to the microwave hood combinations that our microwave site handles. The electronic models keep count of fan hours and speak through their display, so reading the message correctly saves a good number of visits.

The KitchenAid lineup

What is particular
to KitchenAid.

We work on KitchenAid wall-mount and commercial-style canopy hoods, island-mount canopies, under-cabinet hoods, custom hood liners and the retractable downdraft. On the under-cabinet hoods the model/serial/rating plate is inside the hood on the left wall.

Two ways to spell a filter reminder

Depending on the control, a KitchenAid hood shows a single letter, F after 30 fan hours and C after 120, or spells it out as Clean Grease Filter and Replace Charcoal Filter. The reset button differs between the two, so we ask which one you see.

Auto means the hood took over

On the 30- and 36-inch under-cabinet control, a heat sensor near the keypad drives the blower to its top speed and shows Auto, and the speed cannot be lowered until the area cools. It is a protection mode, not a stuck keypad.

The hood has to know it is recirculating

Vented or recirculating is a control setting on these hoods: Able turns the charcoal reminder on and None turns it off. A hood set the wrong way either nags for a charcoal filter it does not have or never reminds you about the one it does.

Rattles start at the fasteners

KitchenAid's help for a rattling hood points to loose screws on the cover and a drive motor that has shifted out of place. Tightening what is loose often ends it; a motor that has moved on its mount is ours to reseat.

Parts

KitchenAid sells vent filters, in-line blowers and installation kits as separate hood accessories, so a filter or remote blower is ordered by its own part number. Charcoal filters are not the same across lines: one under-cabinet guide calls for a disposable kit every 6 months, while the hoods that show C use a washable filter that lasts about three years.

Repair or replace

Control boards, keypads, LED lamps and blower motors are all worth replacing on a KitchenAid hood that is mounted solidly and vents well. When a hood is undersized for a new cooking surface or the duct cannot be improved, a new hood may be the better spend.

Questions about
KitchenAid range hoods.

What does the letter F on my KitchenAid vent hood mean?
It is the grease filter reminder. After 30 hours of fan use the display shows F whenever the fan runs. Wash the metal filters, let them dry, and hold FAN for 3 seconds to clear it.
Why did my KitchenAid hood jump to full speed and show Auto?
The heat sensor near the controls picked up excessive heat and set the blower to its highest speed. You cannot lower it until the area cools, and then it returns to your earlier setting on its own. If Auto stays on with the burners long off, book a visit.
Can I wash the charcoal filter on my KitchenAid hood?
Only on some models. On hoods that show C, KitchenAid says the charcoal filter can be washed in the dishwasher and reactivated in the oven, then replaced after about three years. The under-cabinet guide W10674120 says its charcoal filter is not washable and should be replaced.
My KitchenAid hood is rattling. What can I check?
With the power off, check that the screws holding the cover are tight. If they are and it still rattles, something inside has worked loose or the motor has shifted on its mount; book a visit rather than taking the hood apart.
