What AUTO blinks 3 times
actually means.

The downdraft protects its own electronics. When the sensor reads too much heat, AUTO blinks three times and the fan speeds up; the lower speeds light and cannot be chosen until things cool. When the temperature drops, the hood holds its current speed and goes back to normal use.

What to do when AUTO blinks 3 times shows on the range hood

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Thermador's own guidance for AUTO blinks 3 times on its range hoods. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Let the blower run; it is clearing heat that could harm components.

02

Move tall pots or a hot pan that sits right against the intake to a burner farther away, and lower very high flames.

03

Wait for the hood to cool, then try choosing a lower speed again.

04

If AUTO blinks with only modest cooking below, book a visit to have the sensor checked.

What not to do

Three blinks of AUTO are not the same as pressing AUTO to turn on automatic mode, which starts the fan at medium when the control senses heat. It is also not the filter reminder, which blinks FILTER.

Questions
about AUTO blinks 3 times.

Can I clear AUTO blinks 3 times myself?
Let the blower run; it is clearing heat that could harm components. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why can't I lower the fan on my Thermador downdraft after AUTO blinked?
While the sensor still reads high heat, the lower speeds are locked out. Once the intake cools, the hood lets you choose them again.
Is AUTO blinking on a Thermador downdraft dangerous?
It is a protective reaction, not a breakdown. If there is flame or smoke coming from the vent itself, turn the burners off and treat it as a fire, not a code.
What makes a Thermador downdraft overheat?
Very high heat right next to the intake, such as a wide pan searing on the rear burner, is the usual cause. If it happens with gentle cooking, the sensor or its wiring needs a look.

Still showing AUTO blinks 3 times?

Three things make the booking useful: the letters or blink pattern exactly as they showed, the full model number from the label behind the filters, and whether the fan still moves air on every speed. With those, the technician arrives with half the answer already worked out.
