A stainless steel wall-mount chimney range hood fixed to a white subway tile wall in a US home kitchen, the range hood's rectangular chimney cover rising straight to the ceiling, soft steam rising from a pot into the canopy, the range hood filling the upper half of the frame, the cooking surface below cropped and out of focus at the bottom edge.

When a BlueStar range hood drips grease or leaves smoke hanging over the burners, the visit starts at its baffles and the channel that drains them.

BlueStar range hoods,
specifically.

BlueStar makes hoods to sit over its own cooking equipment: a long list of Designer and Professional wall hoods, Manhattan island hoods, stand-alone metal liners and custom hoods made to a drawing. Each hood can pull air with its own in-hood blower or with a remote blower on the roof or in the duct, and which one you have decides where a noise or a weak draw comes from.

The BlueStar lineup

What is particular
to BlueStar.

The wall-hood manual covers models starting AT, BZ, HA, IN, ME, MH, NR, PL, PM, PY, SC and WR, from the Pro-Line and Pyramid to the Wrangler and Normandy, plus island hoods and the Professional metal liners in widths up to 70 inches. BlueStar keeps a separate manual for hoods built before May 2020.

The blower may not be in the hood

BlueStar wall hoods take an in-hood blower, a remote external blower on the roof or wall, or an in-line blower in the duct. With a remote blower, a hum or a failed motor is outside the kitchen, and the hood's own wiring only carries the signal.

One icon, two meanings

On the current push-button panel the timer icon blinks while the 15-minute shut-off is counting down, and it also blinks when the blower is off to ask for filter cleaning. Which one you are seeing depends only on whether the blower is running.

Boost that ends after seven minutes

The Boost key blinks while it is active and moves the blower to high speed after seven minutes. A hood that steps down from Boost on its own is working as designed.

Baffles you should not take apart

BlueStar's baffle filters go in the dishwasher or a sink of warm soapy water, but the manual warns against taking a baffle apart. A rear filter holder and an inner shield behind the baffles also collect grease and need cleaning.

Parts

Many BlueStar hoods are built to order in a chosen color, size and trim, so a painted shell part takes time. Liners, blowers, baffles and control panels are standard, but the hood's model prefix and whether it has an in-hood, in-line or roof blower are needed to order the right one.

Repair or replace

A BlueStar hood is a heavy steel shell around a replaceable liner and blower, so repair is nearly always the right choice. A failed remote roof blower is replaced as a module, and the hood stays where it is.

Questions about
BlueStar range hoods.

The timer icon on my BlueStar hood is blinking and the fan is off. What does it want?
That is the filter reminder. Clean the baffle filters and the rear filter holder, then press and hold the timer key for three seconds to clear it.
Why does my BlueStar hood drop out of Boost?
Boost is timed: after seven minutes the blower moves to high speed by itself, and the Boost icon stops blinking. Press Boost again if you still need it.
My BlueStar hood hums but barely pulls. Where is the problem?
Check whether your hood has a remote roof or in-line blower, since the motor may be far from the kitchen. Long or bent duct runs also cut the draw; BlueStar asks for a straight run under 30 feet, minus 5 feet for every 90-degree turn.
Can a BlueStar hood be wired without a plug?
Yes. BlueStar allows the cord to be removed at the liner's junction box and the hood to be hard-wired to a dedicated non-GFCI 120-volt circuit, which should be done by an electrician.
