Bosch range hoods,
specifically.

Bosch covers the widest spread of hood styles in its group: chimney wall hoods, under-cabinet and pull-out hoods, an island hood and custom inserts. Their controls talk in plain words on some models and in lit or flashing keys on others, so knowing the series tells us what a message means before we arrive.

The Bosch lineup

What is particular
to Bosch.

Bosch sells chimney wall hoods (HCB, HCP), under-cabinet and pull-out hoods (DUH, DUHP), an island hood (HIB) and custom inserts (HUI, HCI) in its 300, 500, 800 and Benchmark series. Its ventilation page also shows a downdraft style.

Messages spelled out in words

Bosch's 500 and 800 Series wall hoods write clean grease filter, replace charcoal filter, Auto or End on their display rather than using numbers. Owners can often read the answer straight off the hood.

A heat sensor that overrides the keys

On Bosch's under-cabinet hoods the heat sensor thermostat can start the blower at high even with the hood off, and while it is active the keys cannot turn it off. Only the main power switch stops it, which surprises people the first time.

Reminders at switch-off

The newer under-cabinet hoods wait until you turn them off to flash the filter key for 30 seconds. If you walk away you miss it, so a hood that seems to never ask for cleaning may simply be asking at the wrong moment.

Quiet ratings and ducting

Bosch rates its hoods at roughly 1.3 to 4.6 sones. When a Bosch hood gets louder than that, its own troubleshooting points to undersized, oversized or loose ductwork before the motor.

Parts

Replacement grease and charcoal filters are sold as Bosch ventilation accessories, and the model and serial numbers are on a plate behind the metal grease filter. LED modules on the custom inserts are replaced by a technician, not the owner.

Repair or replace

A Bosch hood with a failed light module, switch or control is usually worth repairing, especially an insert built into custom cabinetry. A basic under-cabinet hood with a burned-out motor out of warranty is the case where replacement may cost less.

Questions about
Bosch range hoods.

Why won't my Bosch under-cabinet hood turn off?
If the fan key is flashing slowly, the heat sensor has taken over and only cooling or the main power switch will stop it. If it is not flashing and still runs, book a visit.
My Bosch hood display says Auto and the fan is on high. Is it broken?
On Bosch wall hoods, Auto means overheating protection is running the fan at the top. It returns to normal once the temperature drops.
Why is my Bosch hood so loud?
Bosch's troubleshooting blames most excessive noise on the ductwork: too small, too large, loose, or with loose screws in trim parts. A tight, correct duct run usually quiets it.
My Bosch hood trips the breaker. What should I check?
Bosch points to incorrect wiring or a circuit that is not sufficient. Leave the breaker off and book a visit rather than resetting it repeatedly.
