What Auto
actually means.

This control carries a heat sensor near the keypad. When it senses excessive heat around the control area, it sets the blower to the highest speed whether the fan was on or off, and shows Auto. While Auto is on you cannot slow the fan; it returns to its earlier setting once the hood cools.

What to do when Auto shows on the range hood

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from KitchenAid's own guidance for Auto on its range hoods. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Turn down or switch off the burners below, and move any very hot pan off the front zones.

02

Leave the fan running; it is clearing heat away from the controls.

03

Once the hood has cooled, check that the fan drops back to your earlier setting.

04

If Auto stays on long after cooking has stopped, switch the hood off at the breaker and book a visit.

Cleared?

The code is gone and the blower pulls steam up on every speed again without a new part. If it returns this week, or the filter reminder keeps coming back right after a cleaning, mention it in the booking.

What not to do

Auto is not a stuck keypad, even though the speed buttons stop lowering the fan. If you smell burning or see smoke inside the hood itself, treat it as a burning-smell problem and cut power at the breaker instead.

What you may
notice with it.

The range hood problems Auto tends to arrive with. Answer these at the range hood before anyone is booked.

All problems

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

The hood is doing something it was told to do, not wearing out: a delay-off timer that keeps the blower running for some minutes after the burners go off, a heat sentry that starts the fan by itself when it senses a hot pan, a Sabbath setting that locks the keys and dims the lights, or a link to the cooking surface that sets the speed on its own. No part is needed; a key sequence from the manual, or simply waiting, ends it.

In KitchenAid's own words

“Auto” will appear in the display to indicate that the heat sensor has detected excessive heat.

Questions
about Auto.

Can I clear Auto myself?
Turn down or switch off the burners below, and move any very hot pan off the front zones.
Why can't I turn my KitchenAid hood down while it shows Auto?
The heat sensor has priority. Until the control area cools, the blower stays at its highest speed; after that, it goes back to where you had it.
Is Auto on my KitchenAid hood dangerous?
It is a protective response to heat, not a failure. It becomes a concern only if it will not clear once the burners are off and the hood is cool.
My KitchenAid hood shows Auto with nothing cooking. What should I do?
Switch the hood off at the breaker, let it rest, and power it back up. If Auto returns on a cold hood, the heat sensor or control needs testing, so book a visit.

Still showing Auto?

Three things make the booking useful: the letters or blink pattern exactly as they showed, the full model number from the label behind the filters, and whether the fan still moves air on every speed. With those, the technician arrives with half the answer already worked out.
