Looking up into the open underside of a stainless range hood in a US home kitchen with its filters removed, the round backdraft damper at the top of the range hood's blower outlet visible with its two metal flaps half open, a gloved hand holding a new damper beside it, soft light.

What the range hood damper and duct repair
involves.

A range hood only moves as much air as its path lets through. Above the blower sits a backdraft damper, a light flap or a pair of butterfly leaves that open when the fan pushes and fall closed when it stops, keeping cold air and insects out. From there a duct runs through the cabinet, the ceiling or the wall to a cap outside with a flap of its own. Each piece fails in its own way. A damper glued by grease stays half shut and the hood sounds strong but pulls weakly; a damper with a worn hinge flaps and clatters in the wind. A duct joint that has pulled apart dumps greasy air into the ceiling space. A crushed flexible section, a run with too many elbows or a duct smaller than the hood's outlet chokes the flow. The outside cap can jam, freeze or collect a nest. And in a newer, tightly sealed house, a powerful hood may have no air to pull against unless a make-up air damper opens somewhere else. The visit traces the path from the canopy to the cap, frees or replaces the damper, reseals loose joints that can be reached, and says plainly what larger duct work or make-up air would take.

How the visit goes

Range hood damper and duct repair,
step by step.

Run the hood with a window closed and then open, and show you the difference in draw so the result is plain.

01

Run the hood and feel the flow at the filters and, where reachable from the ground, at the outside cap.

02

Remove the filters and check the backdraft damper for grease, a sticking hinge or a leaf that no longer seals.

03

Follow the duct as far as it can be seen, checking joints, crushed sections, elbows and the size against the hood's outlet.

04

Free, clean or replace the damper and reseal loose joints within reach; note any cap, run or make-up air work needed.

05

Run the hood with a window closed and then open, and show you the difference in draw so the result is plain.

All problems
A stainless wall-mount chimney range hood on a tiled wall in winter light fills the upper half of the frame, faint cold condensation beading on the range hood's lower edge and a fine mist visible drifting down from the canopy, the burners below off. Most common

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether you feel cold air or hear a flap tapping near the hood when it is off
  2. Whether the hood vents through the roof, the wall behind it or a soffit, if you know
  3. Whether the hood pulls better when a window is cracked open
  4. Whether the house was recently sealed, reroofed or had new windows fitted

Freeing or replacing a damper at the top of the canopy is a small part and a short visit. Resealing joints above a ceiling, replacing a jammed wall or roof cap, or rerouting a choked run is quoted on its own once it has been seen.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay storm winds push rain through a hood's wall cap, and a flap that has stopped closing lets water drip back onto the burners; the repair renews the cap and its flap and seals the duct joint where the water got in.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Wall caps on Orlando houses become nesting sites for birds in spring, and a hood that suddenly moves little air often has a nest behind its flap; the repair clears the duct and fits a cap whose guard still lets the flap swing free.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In South Florida the metal wall cap at the end of a hood duct corrodes in salt air until its flap hangs open, letting humid air and insects in; the repair fits a corrosion-resistant cap and checks the backdraft damper at the hood.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In New York co-ops a hood duct often ends in a shared shaft or a narrow light well, and a new hole in an outside wall needs the co-op board to sign off, so a duct repair here works within the run that exists and restores its damper.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston attics hold hood ducts that sag across hot joists, and flexible duct crushed or kinked there cuts airflow and gathers grease; the repair replaces it with smooth rigid duct, sealed at every joint and supported along the run.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland cold slips in through a hood duct whose damper no longer seats, and on January mornings a draft falls from the canopy onto the burners; the repair renews the damper and insulates the duct where it crosses a cold space.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Many Los Angeles houses carry the hood duct through an attic to a roof jack, and ash from the 2025 fires settled into some of those runs; the repair clears the duct, checks the roof jack flap and reseals any joint that shifted.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego coastal wind rattles a hood's wall cap flap and salt eats its hinge, so the flap sticks open and the kitchen loses warmth and gains damp; the repair replaces the cap and the damper and seals the duct at the wall.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area Victorians and Edwardians rarely planned a hood duct, so a later one often winds through walls with sharp turns, and a hood that seems weak is sometimes restored by straightening that run and freeing its damper.

Questions about
the range hood damper and duct repair.

Why does cold air come down through my range hood in winter?
The backdraft damper above the fan or the flap at the outside cap is not closing fully, usually because grease has glued it or a hinge has worn. Wind pushes outside air back down the duct. Freeing or replacing the damper normally stops it.
My hood pulls much better with a window open. What does that mean?
The house is not letting enough air in to replace what the hood pushes out, so the fan is pulling against the house itself. It is common in tightly sealed homes and with powerful hoods. A make-up air damper that opens with the hood is the lasting answer, and local building rules may require one above certain airflows.
Can a range hood duct be too long or too small?
Yes. Every elbow and every foot of duct adds resistance, and a duct narrower than the hood's outlet chokes it. The maker's installation guide lists the size and the longest run allowed. A hood on an undersized or crooked run often sounds strong while moving far less air than it should.
