Most of the hood calls we answer for weak suction, a rising roar or grease dripping onto the burners trace back to the same few neglected jobs. This section covers them: washing the metal mesh or baffle filters, changing the charcoal in a recirculating hood, and a once-a-year walk around the hood with a flashlight and a pot of boiling water.

A Yearly Range Hood Check: Mounting, Fan Speeds, Steam Test and the Outside Cap

Half an hour from the floor with a flashlight and a boiling pot: how the hood hangs, how each speed sounds, whether steam is caught and what the cap outside shows.

Habits that keep it pulling for years.

Every job here is done from the floor with the fan off. None of them asks an owner to remove a flue cover, open a blower housing or climb onto the roof to reach the outside cap, and each guide says where its own limit is. Past that line, the work belongs to a technician.

The intervals come from the hood makers' own published guidance, and they do not all agree. Rather than pick one number, the guides show the spread and explain which way a given kitchen should lean: a household that sears and fries most nights sits at the short end, one that mostly steams and boils sits at the long one.

Keeping grease out of the blower and the duct matters for more than airflow. Grease that gets past a filter settles where heat can reach it, which is why a clean filter is also the cheapest fire precaution in the kitchen. The safety guides on this site cover what to do if a flare-up does happen.

Questions about
maintenance and prevention.

What is the single most useful hood maintenance job?
Washing the metal grease filters on schedule. Clean filters keep airflow up, protect the blower and any charcoal behind them, and keep grease from building up inside the hood.
Do I need special cleaners for a stainless hood?
Warm water with a mild dish detergent and a soft cloth handle routine cleaning. Avoid abrasives and scouring pads, and wipe stainless along its grain rather than in circles.
How do I know if my hood recirculates?
A recirculating hood returns air through slots or a grille near its top and has a charcoal filter behind the grease filter. A ducted hood sends air to a cap outdoors.
Can regular upkeep prevent a blower motor from wearing out?
It cannot stop wear entirely, but clean filters mean less grease on the wheel and less strain on the motor, which Broan-NuTone links to longer hood life.
