What the charcoal layer catches, and what it lets through
Activated charcoal is carbon riddled with tiny pores. Odor molecules in the passing air stick to the walls of those pores, and each gram has an enormous inner surface for them to land on. Broan-NuTone describes the filter as absorbing odors and airborne contaminants before the air goes back into the kitchen.
Heat and water vapor pass straight through, and so does anything the grease filter in front of it missed. The Home Ventilating Institute is clear that a recirculating hood provides no actual ventilation, so a fresh charcoal filter makes the kitchen smell better without making the air any less humid or warm.
Why it stops working with no warning
Once most of the pores are occupied, the filter lets odors pass even though it looks the same as the day it went in. There is no color change that an owner can trust, and airflow through it barely changes. The only reliable signals are elapsed time, fan hours counted by the hood, and the nose.

Intervals the makers publish
The timing of range hood charcoal filter replacement varies by brand, which is not a contradiction: the filters differ in how much charcoal they hold, and kitchens differ in how much they ask of it.
| Source | Interval | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Zephyr | Every 3 to 4 months | Or when the hood's reminder comes on |
| Broan-NuTone filter guide | About every 6 months | Sooner with heavy cooking |

Setting your own interval
Start from the number in your hood's own manual. Move toward the short end if the household fries or sears often, cooks fish or spices that linger, or runs the hood most evenings; move toward the long end if cooking is mostly light. Write the date on the frame of the new filter with a marker so nobody has to remember it.

Signs the filter is spent before the date
A calendar is a floor, not a guarantee. Any of these is reason to change the charcoal early, after first making sure the metal grease filters are clean.
- Last night's dinner is still noticeable in the morning.
- Smells reach the living room or bedrooms quickly while the hood is running.
- The filter reminder is lit and resetting it does not hold.
- A greasy film on the charcoal pad or cartridge, meaning grease got past the front filter.
- The filter is swollen, crumbling or shedding black dust onto the canopy.
Why rinsing or baking it does not bring it back
Broan-NuTone states plainly that charcoal filters cannot be cleaned and must be replaced because they absorb contaminants. Water fills the pores and collapses the pad; soap leaves a film; heat from a home oven can scorch the frame and fill the kitchen with the very odors the filter had trapped.
A few hoods are sold with long-life or regenerating charcoal units that come with their own care instructions. If your manual describes one, follow that manual exactly; if it does not, treat the filter as a consumable part.
Shortcuts that shorten its life or do nothing
- Rinsing it under the tap, which floods the pores and softens the pad.
- Vacuuming the surface, which lifts dust but frees no pores.
- Spraying it with air freshener, which adds a scent for the charcoal to absorb.
- Running the hood without the grease filter in front of it, which coats the charcoal with fat within weeks.

Fitting a new set correctly
Charcoal filters are model specific, and they seldom interchange even between hoods from the same brand. The right one is listed by part number in the manual or on the maker's parts page; Broan's BXT1 series, for example, names a separate non-ducted filter that clips to the back of its aluminum grease filter.
Grease filters come first
Zephyr notes that in recirculating mode the charcoal filters sit behind the grease filters. That order is the reason a clean grease filter doubles the life of the charcoal: every drop of fat stopped in front keeps pores open behind it. Wash the metal filters on the same day you change the charcoal.
Resetting the reminder
Hoods that count fan hours usually clear the charcoal reminder with a long press on one key or a pair of keys, and the combination is in the manual. Some hoods track the grease filter and charcoal separately, so reset the one you actually serviced.
