An under-cabinet range hood is a shallow steel box fastened by screws to the underside of the cabinet that spans the cooking area. The cabinet above it hides what matters: the duct that rises through its shelf and out through the roof or the wall, or, where no duct was ever run, nothing at all, because the hood is recirculating and pushes the air through charcoal filters and back into the kitchen through a front grille. Underneath are the grease filters, the lamps and the controls, often a row of rocker switches or push keys on the front lip. The blower, usually a single motor or a pair of small squirrel-cage fans, sits in the body of the hood directly above those filters. With a cabinet of dishes a few inches overhead and a pot of boiling water a few inches below, this hood lives in a tight, hot space, and its wiring either comes through the wall into a box on the back or through the cabinet floor. Many problems are solved from the underside; a few need the hood lowered from its screws, which is always a job for the technician. What fails on an under-cabinet range hood How to tell 01 A wall cabinet sits directly on top of the hood, and the hood's front edge lines up with the cabinet doors above it. 02 The body is thin, often only five to eight inches tall, with the switches or keys on its front lip rather than on a chimney. 03 Opening the cabinet above shows either a round or rectangular duct passing up through the shelf, or a plain cabinet floor with no duct at all. 04 A hood with no duct usually has a slotted grille near its top front edge where the cleaned air returns to the kitchen. The problems it shows ### Charcoal filters left past their life On a recirculating hood the charcoal pads soak up odor until they are full, and then they only block air. Washing does not bring them back. A hood that seems to run but no longer clears smells or smoke often needs nothing more than new pads and clean grease filters in front of them. ### Rocker switches worn by greasy fingers The mechanical switches on a basic hood carry the motor current directly, and grease works into them from the fingertips that press them. They start to crackle, stick on one speed or cut out when touched, and the fix is a new switch block rather than a new hood. ### Grease dripping from the front lip When the filters are packed, grease condenses on the inside of the body and runs toward the lowest seam, which is usually the front edge above the burners. It drips back onto the cooking surface, stains the cabinet and carries a fire risk until the hood and filters are cleaned. ### Small blower motors under heat The fans in a shallow hood are compact and run hot, sitting only inches above the pans. Bearings go dry and the thermal protector inside the motor can start to shut it down mid-cooking, so a fan that stops and later returns is worth booking before it stops for good. ## Getting at it, and whether to. Filters, lamps and the switch lip are reached from below with the burners cold, so a large share of under-cabinet work leaves the hood where it is. Clear the shelf of the cabinet above before the visit: the power connection, the duct joint and the screws that hold the hood are often reached from inside it. 2. Lowering the hood off its screws takes two hands to support it and one to disconnect it, so that part is left to the technician; please do not unscrew it yourself. 3. Leave the cooking surface below bare and cool for an hour before the appointment, as the technician works leaning over it. Repair or replace An under-cabinet hood is the least expensive kind of range hood to replace, so the question comes up more often here than on any other type. Filters, lamps, switches and a damper are clearly worth fitting. A blower motor on a quality ducted hood is usually worth it too, especially when the replacement would need a new duct transition or a different cabinet cutout. On a basic recirculating hood many years old with a failed motor, the technician gives you the cost of the repair and a plain word on whether a new hood makes more sense. Open the cabinet above it. A duct passing up through the shelf means the air goes outside; a plain shelf with no duct means the hood cleans the air and returns it, usually through a slotted grille on its front. A recirculating hood also holds charcoal filters behind the metal grease filters. ### How often do the charcoal filters in a recirculating hood need replacing? Roughly every three to six months in a kitchen that cooks daily, and at least once a year in a lighter one. Soap and water do nothing to revive them. If smells linger even with the fan on high, old charcoal filters are the first thing to change. ### Why does grease drip from the front edge of my under-cabinet hood? The filters are usually full, so grease condenses inside the hood body and runs to its lowest seam, which is often the front lip. Clean or replace the filters and wipe the underside with a degreaser once it is cold. If the drip continues, the inside of the body needs a deeper cleaning on a visit. ### Should I switch the hood on every time I use the burners? Yes. Starting the fan a minute before you cook sets up the airflow, so steam and grease head up into the filters instead of settling on the cabinet.
