Diagnostic fee ### Range hood diagnostic visit A visit that runs the hood through every speed and light, tests the draw at the filters and follows the air outside until one part is named. Cost: moderate to highest ### Range hood blower motor repair Testing and renewing the fan that moves a hood's air, in the canopy, the duct or on the roof: its capacitor, bearings, wheel or the motor itself. Cost: low to moderate ### Range hood fan switch and control repair Repairing the part the cook touches: rocker switches, push keys or a glass touch strip, and the harness that carries their signal to the blower. Cost: moderate ### Range hood control board repair Testing and replacing the board behind a keypad or touch strip: the relays for each speed and the lights, the timers and the power supply. Cost: low ### Range hood light repair Bringing back the lamps over the burners: halogen and LED lamps, their sockets and covers, and the transformer or driver that powers them. Cost: lowest ### Range hood filter and baffle service Cleaning or replacing what catches grease and odor: mesh and baffle filters, charcoal pads on recirculating hoods, and the grease channel. Cost: low to moderate ### Range hood damper and duct repair Getting the air out of the house: the backdraft damper, the duct and its joints, the wall or roof cap, and make-up air in a tight house. Cost: low to moderate ### Range hood noise and vibration repair Finding what makes a hood roar, rattle or shake, from a grease-heavy wheel or loose screws to a flapping damper, and quieting it at the source. Cost: moderate ### Downdraft vent lift repair Repairing the pop-up vent that rises behind the burners: its lift motor and gears, the limit switches, the blower below and its controls. Cost: low ### Range hood heat sensor repair Testing the sensor that starts the fan by itself when the burners get hot, so the hood starts when it should and stops when the heat is gone. Set the repair against what a new range hood would really take to put up, not just its price on a shelf. A chimney hood needs its brackets, duct collar and tile cut to line up again; an island model comes down from the ceiling frame with two people; an insert has to fit the opening a cabinetmaker built around it. Filters, lamps, switches, dampers, capacitors and heat sensors are small next to that, and even a blower or a board is usually the better choice on those three. A basic recirculating under-cabinet hood is the exception: it is quick to swap, so on an older one with a failed motor the technician shows you both numbers side by side. Which range hood service fits? Choose the diagnostic visit and describe what the fan, the lights, the filters or the damper are doing. Tying that to one of the repairs listed below is the technician's work, and nothing is ordered or priced before it is done. ### My range hood has two separate problems. Will one visit cover both? Most of the time, and on a hood one failure often leads to the next: a filter packed with grease makes the blower strain until its capacitor gives out, and a damper stuck half shut makes the fan roar and pull poorly at once. Each repair gets its own price, and you decide which, if any, to go ahead with. ### Where can I see what these range hood repairs cost? A light driver on an under-cabinet hood and the same part on an island hood hung from a vaulted ceiling are one part and two very different amounts of labor. The cost page sorts range hood jobs into bands, and the diagnosis tells you which band yours belongs in. ### Does the technician bring range hood parts, or come back later? Run capacitors, speed switches, bulbs, LED modules, light drivers and damper flaps are usually in the van, and a model number in the booking improves the odds further.
