A breaker that trips again, or trips with a smell, a hum or a flash, stays off, and the hood is not used until the cause is found; the other outlets on the circuit can wait on the same breaker or be moved to another. ## What it usually means. A breaker trips for one of three reasons: too much current for too long (an overload), a sudden surge from a short, or, on a GFCI or AFCI device, current leaking to ground or an arc it has detected. A hood draws modest current, so a breaker that trips with the hood alone usually means something inside is shorting or leaking. The usual places are a blower motor with a winding breaking down or a stalled rotor, a capacitor that shorted, a light socket or driver with grease or moisture in it, and wiring that chafed on a sharp edge inside the chimney cover. Steam matters here too: a hood that recirculates or one that pulls a lot of humid air can collect condensation on its board and sockets, and a GFCI will notice the leak. Sometimes the hood is innocent and shares a circuit with a disposer, a toaster or the countertop outlets, and the total is simply too much. Resetting a breaker over and over pushes current through whatever is wrong each time, so one reset is the limit.
