Every hood makes noise, and a powerful one at full speed is meant to be heard. The questions are whether the sound is new, and what kind it is. Air noise, a broad rush or roar, comes from air forced through a path that is too tight: packed filters, a duct smaller than the outlet, sharp elbows close to the hood, or a damper that opens only partway. Mechanical noise has a pitch or a rhythm. A whine that rises with speed is often bearings running dry; a grinding or scraping is a wheel rubbing its housing or something loose in it; a ticking that speeds up with the fan is often a blade or a screw catching; a buzz may be the motor straining against a failing capacitor. A whistle can be air leaking through a gap in the canopy or around a filter that does not sit flat. Hoods with remote or in-line blowers are quieter at the canopy by design, so a new noise there often comes from the duct or the blower far from the kitchen, which is traced by a technician, not by an owner in the attic or on the roof. A hood on its top speed is meant to be loud. What matters is a change: a new whine, grind or whistle, or a sound that now drowns out the low settings too. ### Why did it get louder right after the filters were cleaned? A filter that went back crooked or without its latch closing leaves a gap that whistles or roars. Refit each one flat, and the old sound usually returns. ### Can a noisy blower be oiled? Most modern hood motors have sealed bearings that are not meant to be oiled, and oil on a greasy motor attracts more dirt. A whining motor is usually replaced. ### Would a remote blower make the kitchen quieter? Yes, placing the blower on the roof or an outside wall moves most of the sound out of the room.
