Hood lights do a hard job: they sit a short reach above open flame, in a stream of hot, greasy, damp air, and they are switched on at every meal. Older hoods and many current ones use halogen bulbs, small and very hot, in sockets behind a glass or plastic lens. Newer hoods use LED modules or strips fed by a driver, a small power supply that turns house current into the low voltage the LEDs need, and a board or switch that turns them on and sets a dim level. When one lamp goes out, the bulb or that module is the likely cause. When all go out together while the fan still runs, the driver, the light switch or the board's light circuit is the suspect. Flicker comes from a loose bulb, a socket darkened by heat and grease, a driver on its way out, or a dimming setting the board is struggling with. A melted lens or a scorched socket is more than a cosmetic problem, and if the lights flash, smell hot or trip the breaker, the sparking and burning-smell pages come first. Range hood lights not working: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Switch the hood off and let the bulbs cool fully before touching a lens; halogen gets very hot. 02 With the breaker off, replace a halogen bulb with one that matches the manual, touching the glass with a cloth rather than bare fingers. 03 Check the other light settings: dim, night-light, and full, and note which respond. ### Also worth checking - Look at the lens and around the socket for brown, melted or scorched marks, and stop if you find them. - Book a visit with the model number from behind the filters if new bulbs do not help or the lights are built-in LEDs. ### How soon does it need a visit? Not urgent, but work with a light over the burners from elsewhere until it is fixed. Some sockets accept an LED bulb of the same base, but the hood's transformer or dimmer may not suit it, causing flicker. The manual or a visit settles whether a swap works. ### Why do the new bulbs burn out so fast? A scorched socket, a bulb touched with bare fingers, a lens that traps heat or a voltage issue can shorten a halogen's life.
