If the only smell is scorched cooking fat and it ends once the filters are washed, the hood can go back to work; any smoke that continues with the power off is a 911 call. ## What it usually means. A working hood carries cooking smells away, so an odor that seems to come from the hood itself needs sorting out. Two kinds matter. The first is scorched fat: grease on the filters or inside the canopy that gets hot from a big pan below and gives off an acrid, food-like smoke. The hood's wiring, blower and lights sit behind the filters and inside the chimney cover, and on some installations the blower is out of reach in the attic or on the roof; none of those are places for an owner with a ladder and a flashlight.
