A downdraft vent sits behind the burners and rises out of the counter when cooking starts, pulling smoke and steam sideways and down through a filter into a blower in the cabinet below. It is raised and lowered by a small motor driving a gear or a lead screw, and it knows where it is by limit switches at the top and bottom of its travel. When it does not rise, the cause is usually one of a few: something on the counter or in the gap is blocking it, the motor has failed, the gear has stripped, a limit switch is stuck, or the control that tells it to move is not sending the signal. Grease and crumbs that fall into the slot around the vent add friction and can jam the travel over time. The blower in the cabinet below is separate from the lift, so a fan that runs with the vent closed means the lift is the problem, not the blower. The lift motor and its wiring sit under the counter, behind the cabinet panels, and are reached by a technician with the power off.
