# A Range Hood Pulling Away From the Wall or Ceiling: Clear the Space Below

A range hood pulling away from the wall or ceiling is carrying its weight on fewer fixings than it was hung with. Stop cooking under it, keep people out of the space below, switch it off at the breaker and do not try to push it back or hold it up. It needs to be taken down and rehung into studs or ceiling framing.

## At a glance.

A thin dark line where the hood meets the tile, a chimney cover that sits a little crooked, a canopy that moves when a filter is pushed back in: a range hood pulling away from the wall rarely falls without warning, and the warning is easy to read once you know where to look.

### Under it Nobody, and no cooking

A hood that lets go drops straight onto the burners and whoever is standing at them.

### The power Off at the breaker

A hood that has shifted can pull on its own supply wiring.

### What holds a wall hood A mounting strip in at least two studs

Vent-A-Hood's wall instructions fasten the strip to a minimum of two wall studs.

### What holds an island hood Framing rated for twice its weight

Vent-A-Hood says not to hang an island hood from anything that cannot carry double.

## The early signs that a hood is working loose

The first sign is usually a gap. Along the top edge of a wall hood, a shadow appears between the back of the canopy and the tile, wider at one end than the other. On a chimney hood the telescoping cover stops lining up with the ceiling, or its seam twists slightly off vertical.

The second sign is movement. A canopy that shifts when you slide a baffle filter home, a hood that hums louder than it used to because the blower is now shaking a looser frame, or plaster dust on the burners in the morning all say the fixings have started to give.

- A gap along the top or back edge that was not there before.
- A chimney cover that no longer sits square to the ceiling.
- Cracked grout, tile or drywall around the mounting line.
- New rattling or vibration at speeds that used to be quiet.
- Fine dust or flakes of paint on the cooking surface below.

### On an island hood

An island hood hangs from the ceiling alone, so the signs show there: a hairline crack around the chimney's ceiling trim, a slight swing when the fan starts, or a canopy that is no longer level with the countertop edge below it. Any sway is too much on a hood that is meant to feel fixed.

## What to do the moment you notice it

Treat it as a heavy object held up by less than it should be. Stop using the burners beneath it, take pans and utensils off the cooking surface, and keep children and pets out of the space. Switch the hood off at the breaker rather than at its own controls, because pressing buttons or pulling filters puts your hands and head directly under the canopy.

Do not push it back against the wall, drive in a longer screw or hold it up while someone else looks. A hood that has already shifted may be hanging on a single fixing, and the extra force is often what frees the last one.

### Why the breaker matters here

The supply cable runs into the hood near its top, inside the chimney cover or the cabinet above. When the body drops even an inch, that cable is stretched at its connection. Broan's safety instructions ask for power to be switched off at the service panel before any servicing, and a hood that has moved is past that point already.

## Why hoods come away from walls and ceilings

Most loose hoods were hung into the wrong material. Drywall anchors hold a picture frame well and a vibrating steel canopy poorly; each start of the blower works them a little looser. Vent-A-Hood's wall instructions attach the mounting strip to at least two wall studs for exactly that reason, and add that extra framing may be needed where a back-vented duct runs between them.

Heat and grease play a part too. Screws set into a cabinet bottom that sits above the burners every day can loosen as the wood dries and swells, and a heavy grease load inside the canopy adds weight that was never counted.

### Island hoods need framing, not drywall

Vent-A-Hood's island instructions say load-bearing framework in the ceiling is necessary and that additional framing may be required. They also set a margin: do not attach an island hood to a structure that cannot support twice the weight of the hood. A ceiling bracket screwed into drywall between joists does not meet that.

### Inserts inside a built hood

A hood insert hangs inside a wood or plaster surround built by a carpenter. When it drops, the question is whether the insert pulled out of its frame or the whole surround is moving. Either way the surround stays unloaded and unused until someone has opened it from below.

## Rehanging it properly

The repair is a take-down and a rehang, not a tightening. The hood is lowered by two people, the duct joint and the wiring are disconnected, the old fixings come out and the wall or ceiling is opened far enough to find solid framing. Manufacturers' instructions put this work with qualified installers under local codes.

It is also the right moment to check what the loosening did elsewhere: a duct joint that pulled apart inside the chimney, a damper flap bent by the movement, or a cable with its insulation pinched at the entry point.

- The hood lowered by two people and set down on a protected surface.
- Duct joint and supply wiring disconnected with the breaker off.
- Old anchors removed and the wall or ceiling opened to find studs or joists.
- Blocking added where framing does not line up with the mounting points.
- The hood rehung, the duct resealed and the damper checked before power returns.

## Where to stop

A hood that has moved at all is a visit, not a weekend job. Book one straight away if you see a gap, feel any sway, or find dust or fixings on the burners, and keep the breaker off until then. Do not climb onto the counter to look inside the chimney cover or open the blower housing: you would be working under a heavy object that is already loose, next to live wiring.

## Step by step.

Four steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Clear the space below

Stop cooking, take everything off the burners and keep people and pets away from the hood.

02

### Switch off at the breaker

Cut power at the panel instead of reaching up to the hood's own controls.

03

### Leave it where it is

Do not push, prop or hold the hood; extra force can free the last fixing.

04

### Book the rehang

Arrange for the hood to be taken down and fixed back into studs or ceiling framing.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### How heavy is a typical range hood?

It varies widely by size and material, from a light under-cabinet unit to a large stainless or copper island canopy. The label and installation manual list the weight, and the fixings have to be chosen for it, not for the look of the wall.

### Can I prop the hood up with a board until the visit?

It is safer to leave it untouched, keep the cooking surface clear and keep people away. Propping means standing under it while you place the support, which is exactly when a hood tends to let go.

### Why did my under-cabinet hood drop at the front?

It is screwed into the cabinet bottom above. If those screws were short, went into thin panel or the wood has softened from years of heat and steam, the front edge sags first because the weight sits forward of the wall.

### Is a small gap along the top edge normal?

Not if it is new or growing. A hood that was hung tight against the wall and now shows a shadow line has moved, and the movement usually continues.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Range hood diagnostic visit

A visit that runs the hood through every speed and light, tests the draw at the filters and follows the air outside until one part is named.

## More in grease, fire and air.

What to do when a pan catches fire under the hood, when sparks or a burning smell come from it, when the hood starts pulling away from its mount, and how the hood keeps cooking fumes out of the air you breathe.
