# Range hood guides, read first.

A range hood repair guide is only useful if it answers the question you actually have, so these are split by what you are trying to find out — is this worth paying for, what is that noise, what can I check myself — rather than by which part of the appliance it concerns.

## Work out what you are dealing with.

Split by what you are trying to find out rather than by what part of the appliance it concerns.

Reading did not fix it?

### The work itself

Every guide here ends in the same place: what a technician actually does about it, in the order it gets done.

10 kinds of work Cheapest cause first What a visit costs

Curious what the repair might add up to? That has its own page, because no honest number exists before the hood has been tested — [range hood repair cost](https://rangehooderepair.center/cost/).

## Not sure where to start?

A handful of questions arrive with nearly every range hood booking. The four guides below are for whoever is standing at the burners with smoke drifting past the canopy or a fan that sounds wrong, and more than one of them finishes without a visit.

[Or start from the symptom](https://rangehooderepair.center/problems/)

### Flames in a pan below the hood A Grease Fire Under the Range Hood: Lid On, Burner Off, Never Water

How oil warns before it catches, the NFPA and USFA order of steps, the moment to get out and call 911, and what to look for in the filters and canopy afterwards.

### The fan runs, the smoke stays Why the hood stopped pulling smoke: filters, the damper and the air around it

Weak capture usually has a date and a place: a season of grease on the filters, a flap that no longer swings, a new window beside the burners or a blocked cap outside. The blower comes last.

### A roar, a whine or a rattle overhead Why a range hood gets loud: buzzing filters, a chattering flap and worn bearings

Air noise rises with the speed; mechanical noise has a pattern. How to tell a loose filter or cover from a rubbing wheel, a humming motor or bearings on their way out.

### Fix this hood or buy a new one Repair or Replace a Range Hood: The Shell, the Part and the Woodwork Around It

Why a sound body usually means repair, which parts are routine and which bodies are not worth saving, and why an insert in a custom hood leans hardest toward fixing.

## When reading is not enough.

If the checks in a guide did not settle it, a technician picks up from there. The visit, stop by stop.

[What repairs cost](https://rangehooderepair.center/cost/)

1. 01 Airflow, speed by speed
2. 02 A figure before any work
3. 03 Common parts in the van
4. 04 Pulling steam before we go

## When there is no time to read.

These five mean nobody cooks beneath the range hood until a technician has looked at it: a grease fire in the pan or the hood, sparks from the blower or the lights, a hot electrical smell, a breaker that trips, or a hood coming away from the wall or the ceiling. Each page puts the causes in the order worth checking, and says when to stop and book.

## Questions about the guides.

### Can a range hood guide spare me a visit?

Sometimes it can; a good share of calls end at a clogged filter, a filter reminder that only needed resetting, a delay-off timer doing its job or a damper taped shut since installation. The guides explain why a hood stops pulling, why it gets loud and why it runs on by itself, and which checks are safe from the floor. Nothing they suggest goes past the filters, the lights you can reach and the controls; the chimney cover, the blower housing and the wiring stay with us.

### Are the range hood guides written for one make?

Mostly not. A capacitor or a backdraft damper does the same job whatever the badge says, so the guides are arranged by kind of hood rather than by make. Where one brand works differently, the guide points it out; your own manual still comes first.

### Which comes first for a hood: a guide or a problem page?

If the hood is acting up today, go to the problem pages, which begin at the sign you can see or hear. Guides are for questions you can take your time over: ducted or recirculating, how often to change charcoal filters, how much air a hood needs, or when a new hood beats another repair.

### Where do the facts in the range hood guides come from?

Each specific claim is tied to its source: a maker's use-and-care or installation manual, or published guidance from NFPA, the US Fire Administration, the EPA, the Department of Energy or ENERGY STAR. A point with no source beside it is our technicians' own experience from the field, and it says so.
